What about this? Is there any way that there could be a compression leak, or an exhaust leak, into his crankcase from a bad head or gasket? Just wondering if there are any other things that wouldn't require a full block rebuild. Something just in the upper end.
Maybe through a blown gasket or a cracked head allowing exhaust or compression to slip under the intake manifold surface and into the crankcase.

I haven't re-read the whole thread, but naturally, if the engine is old enough, it would be worth it to just rebuild the whole thing even if it's just a head. But if it's got less than 75 to 100 k on it, maybe just a quick upper end refurb can do the job?

Guess I'd better re-read the rest to see what you've all been discussing!
