Back on the road again!

#51 was taken off the road in 1986 and after 34 long years is back on the road one again! I still have handful of things to still do and adjust but I’m getting close to the finish line!

I can’t wait to get it all dialed in and finish it off with the caps and rocker stripes!!!

Rocker stripes are fantastic I like they way they look. Are you going to try your hand at the hand painted pin stripe????????? ;D

That looks great Jeff! I know the rush you get when you take it out for the first drives! There's nothing like it! The rocker stripes, painted on grill letters and a few little details and it's stunning!!

Thanks guys!!!

Yeah first time rush is a mixture of excitement and nerves. lol

Another interesting early production quirk, the lift gate drains/seals. #51’s obviously are the old ones. It actually wasn’t a drain like the 2nd version. Not sure their original thinking on first attempt... I guess the water would be caught cup part of the seal then drain off towards the back tailgate seal?

Anyhow I’m curious how quickly they figured the issue with first seal. You can see where they mounted the seal compared to where they had pre-drilled holes for it. I purposely left all the assembly line changes on this truck to show how new it was in production! For #51 I trimmed off the drain and reused all the original mounting screw holes.

Another odd quirk about #51 is the back seat without any provisions for seat belts.

What is odd #51’s trim code is 798. I always understood that as front bucket seats which would come with a bulkhead. The truck was absolutely in original paint inside and out. If there was a bulkhead in it... the bulkhead was pulled out right before paint! Strangely enough it was missing two bulkhead delete screws. To make matters more interesting the back seat was added in by the factory because all the hardware exactly matched the front seats’ hardware. Even more curious there was no provisions to add in back seat belts!

#51’s DSO is 89 so it never went to a dealership it was a Ford vehicle right from the start. So either they missed marked the trim code or Ford made a change of heart and planned to add the back seat and put the spare tire on the tailgate?

Once again sorry for the sideways pic!

Can't remember if it was Todd or Tim that said that just because it was a 7 seat code in the 66 it didn't necessarily mean that it didn't come with a rear seat. Once the 9 was introduced it definitely meant front buckets with rear seat. My 10/65 is 798 and had no bulkhead but had a rear seat if one time and the hardware for the seat bolts was welded to the bottom of the floor. No extra holes for seatbelts that I could determine, it was a little rusty from there back.

For #51 I have an unused original Firestone Town and Country spare. But to sweeten it up I have paper tag of dealer instructions for the spare.

Personally I have only seen one other like it. Who else has seen these still on a truck before?

Once again sorry the sideways pics!

Hey Jeff! That's a very nice Town & Country! It doesn't appear to have any dryrot either! I've heard of the paper tag on the spare tire hardware before, but I've never seen one. I guess because the dealers did their job!;)

Does the Firestone have a date code on the tire? I thought the Town and Country wasn't available until '72 or '73? Still way cool though.

Actually it dated for 1970 and amazingly enough no dry rot. I figured it was more genuine if I used a town and country for s spare the a Power King. ;)

Right now I have about 65 miles on the Bronco. Still waiting for a few pieces hope to have it all wrapped up by week’s end! ;D
