The 76 torque converter is the small 10.5 bolt pattern. I need a large 11.4 model to work with the 50oz and 164 tooth flexplate. Would a stock converter for a 73 work or should i get a higher stall? 31 inch tires all stock motor. thanks

Interested to see how this pans out.
If you’re running the flex plate from the Explorer, that was meant to be used with a 4R70 transmission. Which I thought had a slightly different offset, aside from the different bolt pattern of course.
I wonder how hard it would be to have your original bronco flex plate re-configured to 50 ounce?

The problem with the original flexplate (164 tooth, 10.5" bolt pattern) is there are no converters available for it. They are not the same as the converters used on the smaller 157 tooth flexplates, which are very common. Although they share the same 10.5" bolt pattern, the length of the pilot which should extend into the rear of the crankshaft is different. It's too short with the common converter.

I was thinking they might be able to use the same existing C4 converter with the C4 transmission.
Might make things simpler, as long as you know the existing converter is still in good shape, even at this age.

Worked on this yesterday. Had found a 50oz flexplate that had mounting holes for the small torque converter. Got it all bolted up but engine was bound up and woundnt turn. Diassembled and ordered a explorer flexplate and a large torque converter for a 73 bronco. will update when parts arrive.

The wrong offset is the E4OD/C6 flexplates. The 4R70W flexplate is correct for a C4

There are still 10.5 bolt circle flexplates out there, but they are generally for the smaller bellhousing car applications. The Bronco 10.5 is a unicorn and longer than the normal 10.5 convertors.

Getting the '73 (or '77) Bronco convertor is the good move.
