Explorer 5.0 swap: Links to write up?

I've seen lots of threads on the '96-2000 Explorer motor swap but haven't located an official write up or parts list. Anyone have a link to this if it exsists? (I do have the Fordfuelinjection link already).

Couple of extra questions:
I heard the explorer steering pump isn't the best for running hydroboost and ram assist. Is there a modification (or doner vehicle) that will let you run a Saginaw on the serp system?

I'd most likely run a FiTech system instead of the factory EFI. In the interim, is there any reason that I can't run an OEM 2 barrel carb and OEM intake manifold on the exploder motor (as long as I install an electric fuel pump)?

Tons of tons of threads on it here about it. Basically the block is the same as yours (ish) I would contact EFI guy. He should be able to help. There are differences in years, P heads started in 1998 or so. Which need specific headers. Other then that, most people find the motors even in high mileage to be nice and clean still. It's a very well designed motor.

The factory explorer or even a swap to mustang efi parts would run/ be better the fitech and be probably cheaper. I got all the mustang efi parts for 100$ off craigslist. The explorer EFI is a OBII, and it very nice. The wiring harness EFIguy makes is great and compact.

http://classicbroncos.com/forums/showthread.php?t=224697

Your intake should bolt right up to the motor. The only issue is the explorer doesn't have a distributor, but you can add one.

The explorer pump is awesome, and lots of people use it with hydroboost. Hope this helps.

Don't forget balance.....

302's prior to 1981 are 28oz and after that are 50oz. The Explorer engine will be 50oz so you need to run the correct flywheel/flexplate and balancer. You can not mix and match.

I believe he is talking about swapping the whole motor. So balancer should stay 50oz. At least I think so.

I'm actually running a 435 manual trans so I'd need to get that 50oz balancer from those guys out in Cali if they still make them.

Thanks for the input gents.

Every single auto parts store carries this flywheel - 80/90's pickups had those transmissions in them. Get an 11" clutch too.

Here's Dan WHeeler's writeup. TOns of great info.
http://classicbroncos.com/forums/showthread.php?t=150669

I have a 98 explorer 5.0 w np435. I used a Luk clutch for 73 bronco and 90s f150 flywheel. Don't remember the part number but have it somewhere. It was cheap - like $50 at local parts store. I use a TBP mini starter.

I purchased the wildhorses Saginaw ps pump bracket. Had to do some minor trimming on it but it works great. Now that I have it, it would be super easy to make one. http://www.wildhorses4x4.com/produc...-Bracket-Set-non-AC-only/EXPLORER5ENGINEPARTS.

I run an astro hydroboost. Had a local shop build the lines. They let me take the hose and fittings home to mock em up then they cut and crimped. My ps pump is from an early 90s suburban w hydroboost that has dual return in the reservoir. I have a 5.75" pulley on the ps pump that doesn't flow enough at idle to turn my tires very well. Once the RPM's get over about 1k it turns everything fine - even when locker is engaged in front in the rocks. I will soon be swapping in a 5" pulley that I have lying around. There's a lot of information on the net about ps rpm vs crank rpm, cavitation, pump size, etc. I have a lot of return line and stock ps cooler. Eventually, I will get a larger cooler and mount it in front of radiator.

I run factory 2bbl manifold and autolite 2bbl carb.

I use a 1985 mustang gt dizzy. Has proper gear for roller cam and was designed for carb. Just bought one from local parts store. One minor issue I had was with the vacuum advance. For whatever reason my ported vacuum was not pulling enough vac to properly advance the vac advance on the 85 dizzy. I switched to full manifold vac and set the timing accordingly and all is well. For some reason my ported vac pulls just a tad less than the other ports and that was enough to make a difference. Some day I may get a different springs in the dizzy but it works great for now. Idles smooth, good power and acceleration, etc.

I'm running a ford duraspark ignition mounted on driver side firewall.

Carter electric fuel pump without external pressure regulator, mounted on inside of driver side frame rail, above rear axle. So far I haven't had any fuel pressure issues. The pump is noisy at startup but quiets down after a bit. Use the rubber isolators on the mounts.

I'm using an oil pressure sensor switch to control the power to the fuelpump in case of roll over. I figured that was better than inertia switch for lots of offroad bouncing around. I run a 'T' into the stock oil pressure port on the side of the block. One port goes to the pressure switch and one goes to the gauge.

I eliminated the oil cooler adapter stuff and bought a simple little adapter to run a stock 302 oil filter. Threads into the block and allows the 302 filter to mount.

I kept the explorer stock 98 exhaust manifolds. They apparently flow better than the earlier manifolds but I'm sure they don't flow as good as a good set of headers. But being P-heads I didn't want to spring for the more expensive headers. The 98 explorer manifolds interfere with the clutch bell crank so I modified the bellcrank to fit around it.
Probably easier to just do a hydraulic clutch setup but I'm cheap and the mod was free. I modified the rest of the explorer two into 1 exhaust to fit under the bronco.

You have to run a different length serp belt with the Saginaw pump. Just run a rope around everything and measure to get length needed and take that to any parts house.

I run explorer metal blade clutch fan with modified earlier explorer 4.0 fan shroud.

Ford motorsports plug wires best bang for your buck.

4G alternator wiring allows elimination of the external voltage regulator and is pretty simple to wire.

FYI... when the time comes I too want to do EFI but I will be doing the explorer OBDII. Thanks to EFI guy - he has significantly simplified the process!

In the meantime I have yet to find an angle my 2bbl won't run and I've been straight up and down and almost on each side a few times. Leaves a lot of power on the table and is nowhere as efficient as EFI but it works great in the interim.

I have a champion radiator and can get you radiator hose numbers if you like. Upper I ended up splicing two different hoses together. Lower I found one that fits perfect. I use the explorer standard water pump.

Dan's thread has lots of great info, but holler if you think I can help.

It's a little late to be looking at an engine swap for LEBC Roundup, don't you think? ;D

You've got my number it you have any questions. Of course, I didn't do mine exactly how you're talking about doing it, so...

I will say, for what you do with your rig there's no point in swapping in a new motor unless you do EFI. and the FItech would work fine on the old motor...if its in decent shape, I suppose. That saves a lot on flywheels and such.

If you're wanting the explorer serp setup, but you don't want the explorer pump, theres no need in using the explorer brackets to do serpentine. But from what i'm told there are aftermarket pumps to be had from PSC and similar places.

Lot's of combinations there. Figure out which way you want to go and I'm sure someone can guide you to the right parts to make the combination work.

Yeah definitely too late for LEBC. I'm definitely wanting to go EFI but just not there yet. I've seen a couple great deals on '96 exploders and have a buddy that is going to help me "warm" the motor Up a bit. I'm in no rush to install the motor but would like to snag a good deal on one and start working on it in the engine stand.

That engine I have now runs flawlessly honestly so I figure I'll continue to use it until I get the other one ready to drop in. Who knows...by then I might have my EFI $ together!

FYI, just at the junkyard and they wanted only $325 for the entire motor, serp, accessories and induction stuff, everything. You get to pull it. So seems the overpicing on a used motor is over. This is you pull it on 35th Ave Phx.

Guy down the street just told me he swapped in a crown vic 5.0 and aod, works great.

I did almost exactly what SavageBurro did, only I was able to start off with a 96 Exploder, which simplified the exhaust question for me.

The stock Exploder power steering pump does not have enough flow to turn a 4x4x2 box at idle. I suffered with it for quite a while until I saw the WH Saginaw conversion bracket and jumped on that. There are write ups on how to convert / upgrade the stock Exploder pump with parts from an F350 if you want to keep that OEM look. My next step is Hydroboost, so Saginaw was the way I went. Good luck on your build! B2

Oh, and sometimes folks have clearance issues with the lower front idler pulley on the passenger side hitting the crossmember. I've seen a lot of folks have to notch the cross member. I got lucky and had no issues with it.

You going to LEBC?! It's been a while for me and I'm thinking I'll make it this year.

Cheers, Bill

Hey Bill,

If its not too inconvenient - would you lemme know what diameter pulley you're running on your PS pump?

Oh yeah - the crossmember clearance. I probably didn't 'need' to, but I took a large sledge to the area below the idler pulley just to be safe.

Thank you BSquared! I also have the 4x4x2 box (ported for ram assist but not runnnig the ram yet) and hydroboost so I appreciate the input on the exploder pump not pushing enuf volume. My sag pump has been great for 10 years it'd be great to be able to keep it.

I am planning to be at Round Up again this year but I can't make it until Friday. Any chance that I can check out your set up at K2?

Or go to a smaller pulley from Napa #36079 = 60mm
