I am accumulating parts to install the Explorer serpentine setup on my stock 77 motor and need guidance on the best way to eliminate the fuel pump eccentric cam behind the timing chain cover. I have not opened up the timing cover yet and would like to have the right parts on hand. I am assuming the stock washer on the retainer bolt is not large enough in diameter to retain the timing gear, and the alignment pin will be too long. What parts will I need to accomplish this, and is there any concern about endplay or preload on the cam on a 30k mile stock motor? Any help would be appreciated.

Just take the eccentric off, the dowel pin does not protrude into the eccentric, only the cam gear. As far as retainer bolt and washer I believe are perfect length and washer diameter also correct, unless you happen to have the bolt and washer from the explorer 5.0, that’s what I used.

End play is set via the retaining plate behind the cam gear. So no worries there.

Depending on whats been done to this engine in the past,,,if it has a 2 piece fuel pump eccentric then it will have a short pin,,,but if a 1 piece then would have a long pin so may need to be cut down or replace with a short pin...

Thanks for the replies! I helped a buddy of mine do this swap on a 1988 5.0 roller motor many years ago and remember the dowel pin was an issue.
