A little more progress

I had to repair the cowl panel and the ends of the windshield support. I used an old firewall down to where the rust got bad on it and made a patch panel for the upper trans tunnel.

And how do you get pictures to view right side up?

After about 20 times of taking door post off and moving them I hung the doors, installed fenders and set the windshield frame and hood in place. All the gaps look good. Going to have to do some body work around the top of the upper quarters but that should be minimal. I have taken all of the panels back off and have begun welding everything down. Seems like a million spot welds.

A little more progress

This afternoon was able to get the wheel tubs and bed filler plates installed. Got them tacked in and ready to do final welding. I left the filler neck covers loose and just have them set in place in the picture. I will instal them last after I get fuel tank in and hoses fitted. There will be a little fitting work on them, but nothing too extreme.

More patches

Today I worked on the core support. Was rotten behind the pass side mount probably from leaking battery in the past. I cut the rot out and fabbed a patch out of 16 ga sheet. Got it welded in and a couple of more cracks welded and ground. Started putting the new mounts on and ran out of shielding gas. I will have to wait till Monday to get a new bottle and finish the repair.

More welding

Well I broke down and bought one of the HF spot welders. Probably one of the best decisions I’ve made, just wish it had been sooner. I used it for about an hour total last night and it saved hours of plug welding. I actually set it up and welded a couple of tag pieces of 16ga to try it out. I adjusted the hold time to about 3 seconds and that was it. I cleaned and dressed the tips a couple of times but overall it worked great. Saved a bunch of time laying underneath welding the bed floor and filler panels not to mention sparks falling down my neck.

windshield frame repair

Started repair on my windshield frame today. Overall was in really good shape. Had some rot in the passenger side weatherstrip lip and the caged nut for the frame hold down was stripped and broke loose.

First, started by fitting a new piece of 16ga as a patch. i measured and drilled a 1/2" hole so I could center a 3/8" nut in it as I did not have a new caged nut. I welded the nut to the inside of the patch piece and welded it in.

Next I started on the rusted lip. I cut the bad section out and welded in a new patch piece. Overall turned out pretty good. Also fitted my auto steering column. This column came out of an old 66 F-100 that I bought a few years ago that had been converted to automatic and power steering. It has been sitting in the barn since I got it so it became a donor. Not really sure what the column was out of but it was close enough to use. I had to cut the dash mount bracket loose from the column and move it a little but otherwise fits good, I think. On the last picture could someone get this measurement off of their truck for me to reference?

Been awhile since I've posted but slowly making some progress. Have the tub welded completely, seam sealed and primered with epoxy primer on the inside. Built a couple of frame dollies from some old tubing I had in the barn and slapped some cheap HB wheels on it so I can move in and out of the garage easier. Removed the front clip in preparation to remove the tub from the frame so I can get started with the frame buildup.

This is an extended pedal assembly that I modified to be able to relocate the hydro boost out over the wheel tub and still be able to use the clutch pedal. I pinned the brake pedal to the shaft so it will actuate the linkage for the HB. Still need to add support to the shaft on the end as recommended by some of you on here. Also a pic of the body outside on the frame dollies before I tore it back down. Door gaps are set. Had to add shims at a couple of tub mounts but turned out really good. Next step is removing the tub.

Back for the 2-year update! Thanks for keeping it alive. Life does tend to get in the way of projects, doesn't it?
Looking forward to seeing more and more of it come together.

Well, waiting on some axle parts to arrive and decided to do something I've been needing to do, and something that I can actually afford at the moment. I took the driver inner wheel tub and cut the old rusty metal out and started making patches for it.

Got the patches relatively close and started fitting them to the tub.

Had to remove the patches a couple of times to trim and fit a little better but turned out to be a pretty decent fit. Ready to weld and try to keep from warping up too bad. Considering the cost, availability, and pricey shipping, I think it will probably work out. Now to the passenger side tomorrow.

Got the patches welded up yesterday. Didn’t turn out too bad.

I cut the front legs off of my cage and started fabbing the brackets for a plate style kick panel attachment. Want to be able to use the e-brake and glove box without modifying them. The legs landed at the front edge of the door. Does this bar look too low? Didn't want to obstruct any of the view through the windshield.
