I love the lessons going on here for all of us.

most of the spacers that I've used are directional, with no instructions.... one side toward the bearing and it rubs flip it over on the shaft and it does not rub. I'm sure that would stand out, but not everyone is looking at your parts. My guess is someone is making a cheap spacer that is not clearanced to clear the bearing.

If it wasn't a 4 hour drive, I'd hand deliver a Timken bearing for free and/or a spacer that is machined for bearing clearance.
Thanks for the offer. 4 hours is a bit far. If I was still coaching softball I would just join a tournament in Shawnee. and come get them between games. :)

Yes no instructions.....one side of the spacer IS tapered and does not contact the bearing cage. The other side is not tapered and contacts the cage on the National brand bearings. Both ends of the spacer clears on the old Timken bearing. I feel dumb not noticing it for so long. I got locked in on it being the support or bent pinion.

I did the 9 in my Bronco a few years ago an did not have this issue. That said, I bought a full rebuild kit form UAS Standard gear and I do not recall the brand of bearings were in the kit.

This is the style solid I bought. Did not get it from Jegs.....but appears to be the exact same spacer.

Bearings are on a truck between Buffalo NY and Conway AR......Fingers crossed for Monday delivery.....

Got the new bearings in this afternoon. A day late. Shipping time is now just a guestimate I guess. "A late UPS trailer arrival has delayed delivery. We're adjusting plans to deliver your package as quickly as possible." RIIIIIIGHT.......like they adjusted anything. Their so called adjustment is me waiting an extra day,

New Timken bearings and races installed. Preload at 22 (yes too tight just took a guess at the shims) and the rotation is smooth and consistent. No more bouncing or binding with the solid spacer. Lesson learned.

I'm going to TRY and take the "National" bearings back as I consider them defective. Taking a Timken with me to show them the difference. Probably an exercise in futility but maybe I'll get my money back or store credit.

Advance took the bearings back after a demonstration of what I contend to be a defect. They also took back the races. It's on a gift card :( but better than nothing.

You could turn the gift card into oil or coolant.

FINALLY getting into this 9 inch LS......got my parts yesterday. Broke the carrier down and it's VERY black on the inside. Clutch material I'm guessing. Cleaned what I could. It really needs a dunk in a parts washer. One thing I don't have. The clutches looked fine to the eye and were stacked correctly. Found the preload spring plate was broken. Put the new preload springs in the support block and couldn't get the spring plate to fit. The arches should be over the long pin and it would only fit over the short pins. I did not know that support block was not square. I spun the block around and it all went together.

Bearings and races looked good. Timkens BTY :) Going to run'em

Soaking the clutches now.....

LS is built and 9 is setup. Got my axle bearings yesterday. Figured I would change them as they're originals from 69. Opened the Timken box and found Koyo bearings. I know the 2 have a partnership on needle bearings but I guess it goes beyond just that.

I'd be upset that I paid for Timken and got Koyo, BUT I've run Koyo's for decades and have no qualms about using them.

Got this thing all back together. The rear end is so much happier now with new clutches and friction modifier. Went to a parking lot and did some figure 8's. No more popping or chattering. Nice and smooth.

Still have the pulsing vibration...... :( The search continues for the cause......

I was hoping that had fixed all of the issues.
Me too........but she's SO much happier now......Next thing, fix the pesky oil leak at the back of the intake This will be try #3 on that.......FE's are just difficult. No more cork gaskets. Tried all the tricks and I'm done with that. RTV China wall it is...........Thank god it's not the rear main LOL Engine HAS to come out for that.....It takes 6 hours to get the hooker super comps off and another 6 to install. Maybe quicker with my new lift but still hours

Engine assembler when I worked in an engine machine shop only ever used The Right Stuff from a caulking gun to build up those wall gaskets. Didn't matter what engine make, he did them all that way. He'd let them sit until they were still tacky, but doing their RTV-thing before setting the intake down on them.
HTH.....

Glad the rear end is happy 😃

As for the pulsing, a few things come to mind, driveshaft mildly out of balance, pinion angle unhappiness, tire balance, old tires, exhaust touching some where or that tiny FE touching somewhere lol.

Used to work for a guy that owned a twister special with a super cobra jet 428, despised wrenching on that car but sure enjoyed the test drives 😱😎

I think working on that car is where I learned to appreciate “your everything, being close to your everything and nothing touching where it shouldn’t” being my nirvana.
