97 GMC Safari--has angled bracket, booster, MC, Hoses, distribution block. (yard said @ $75 w/o negotiation)

01 F250--has booster, MC, and hoses

83 Chevy C20--has booster and the MC. hoses were cut.

78 Lincoln Continental--has booster, MC, Hoses, Distribution Block, and PS Pump. car has disc/drum setup. It also has a wide brake pedal. I am running an Auto, and I also have a pedal bracket out of a 1973 Bronco that had a manual tranny. (yard said @ $100 w/o negotiation)

Which would you pirate?

They'll all work, but I kind of agree with going the newer route provided the price is reasonable. I have run astro booster and currently the mustang's. both work the same. If I remeber correctly some of the astro boosters have a long enough rod to attach to the pedal, so you don't have to modify it in length any. The angled bracket can be handy if clearance is an issue..

I had acquire a hydro from a Mark VII that is an electric driven unit. Do not have to run the hydro off of the power steering pump. Unfortunately Katrina hit and took my bronco before I could install. Was planning on trying that route with courrent project. Has anyone used a unit from the a Lincoln Mark VII?

I just looked up some NAPA prices...Corbra w/o master $339 and a $30 something dollar core charge.

Now a lil better one the Mark IV was $204 and a $11 core.....Add the pump w/res For $62 and a $8 core...$285 and a few lines not a bad route!

I still gotta put my body on but here my question where do they get that $700 price for the entire kit at our favorite Bronce parts place?

Could only remeber the years on those 2 while I was price searching.....

1984 mark VII ..........$194 and a $28 core.

NAPA doesnt show a "01 F250 as hydro brakes?

"98 Astro van....$349 and a $50 core!

My bad, I meant 91, not 01.

I was actually leaning towards the '78 Continental route just because I could get the entire setup, including the pump, and It would seam like the hoses may be a little closer to mating up to my '79 F150 power steering box than some of the newer stuff... also, i like the idea of nabbing the wide pedal at the same time...

As far as the age is concerned, it is not like hydraulics have evolved greatly over the past 30 years, so i am not terribly worried about being outdated. For wear, the jury is out: it doesnt seem to bother TOFIC, and he is one of the subject matter experts on this...

My second choice was the astro unit, again because of completeness...

You can't really go wrong with any of the choices, so take the lincoln set up with all the fixings. Make sure the lines are still worthy of the workload, as TOFIC can attest too. I imagine if the unit is complete and still has p/s fluid in it there won't be any issue of contamination or rust etc., but for added insurance it would be worth it to clean up the pieces.. just my 2cents.

That is not a Hydroboost. That is a Bendix ABS system. One of the early ones. The few that I have driven (in stock form) were so bad I thought there was something wrong with the vehicle. Stopped (tried to anyway) opened the hood, saw that POS system, closed the hood knowing that there was nothing I could do to make it any better. It was also used on some Mopar FWD platforms from the late 80's as well.

As for the original question, pending any smoking deals or crap in the systems, I would go Astro.

And for those shopping mustang booster, don't look for a Cobra version. Mustangs are a lot easier to find and a lot more affordable. Generally the Cobra just adds a lot of cost to a part that is the same as the Mustang. Now there are some parts that are very different, like the engine.

Thanks for the info on the Bendix. Guess I didn't waste my time trying to get it to work. After looking it up and reading about that setup, which didn't say it was not a haydro, I thought it would be a good unit.

You should check with a Ford dealership, You should be able to buy a NEW hydro boost unit for a 2005 F250 Super Duty diesel for under $200.

Did a stop at Carquest, you can get the GT for $180 and a $20 core....Ok thats all the price checkin I wanna do..but for you who have done the converion which one is the easiest? Ill give some info on my project and have some questions, My Running chasis is ready but needs the following

Needs complete wiring harness
Needs power steering pump and brackets
Needs all power steering and hydro boost brake lines

Im ordering a complete Glass body in the next few days, my questions for the hydro brakes are

Which one will be easiest to install on the undrilled new tub?

Can the hydro system simply be flipped and master cylinder installed upright? rather than readjusting rear firewall plate?

I am assuming one with a flat rear plate would be best in my project?

302, automatic, 2" body lift If that helps? Just wanna do it right and all new parts is what I like to do, I wont say money is no object but after several thousands in it Ill do the parts house way before the junkyard.

All three are feasible. I'm with the others in that I tend to recommend the later units. They do have some improvements in seals (an h-boost achilles heel) and pedal feel. Regardless of the setup you get, I'd recommend using new hoses - whether you make your own or have them made. Your life, and those around you, are more important than saving a few $$ and re-using old hoses. It sounds like you're leaning towards the Lincoln setup because of the "package deal" aspect of it. If it doesn't look like it's a leaker, I'd say go for it.

LMAO Time out!

I didnt wanna be a terrorist! but I thought we were all grown ups and could learn from each other about hydroboost brakes W/O havin to go dig up every post in the book about it....and still end up with the same questions.

Now TDC WORM I agree with others go with the 76 and please check and recheck every part twice! but Id bet a easier find on newer GT parts in many junkyards and end up with newer updated parts...matter of fact going to look for one today....other reason I pefer shop parts is I dont have many Junkyards around within 60 miles and no pick and pulls!

Now would anyone comment on my questions in earlier post?
