I have been following this forum for some time now looking for advice. I have my 73 stripped to the frame right now and am assemblying the parts needed that require welding before having the frame either painted, powder coated, or rust proofed/painted with POR-15. What are the thoughts out there? I know there are pros and cons which ever way I finally decide to go. Would like to hear from those who have been there and done that before!

I personally like the POR15 route. I did my frame and it looks awesome to this day. I didn't sandblast my frame, just a wire brush job and some degreaser before I used the metal ready and I'm having no problems at all.

I built a Bronco for another member and he had his frame powder coated black. It doesn't look any better than mine and guess what happened when I washed a spot on his frame with lacquer thinner ? It washes off ! Well, at least softens it up. My frame would never do that ! :)

I vote for POR15 as well. I used Rust Bullet on mine and then top coated it. I think it turned out nice, plus it is easy to touch up if/when I need too. ;D

Are there any colors other than black with the Por15?
What all are you assembling on your frame prior to painting it?

Click on the POR-15 link on the left hand side of the screen. Then just click on products. They have some different colors.

I vote on POR-15. I put it on my frame, axles and everything else. It has held up to a pretty good beating in my garage and hasn't chipped or cracked yet. I haven't had it out on the trail yet.

i'm right there with scott. por-15 frame, rear end and soon to be frontend. looks like powder coat to me and is very durable. if done right, it won't chip or peel very easy. i tried with a screwdriver. plus, its cheaper than powder coating and you can always just touch it up.

My experience

Any coating's durability is dependent upon the prep work. For industrial, or automotive details, I've had the best success with power coat, polyester resins. If solvent resistance is a criteria, the epoxy resins are available. A major advantage of powder coat is, electrostatic application. The material goes on uniformly to all surfaces. The obstacle is, internal details, like boxed frame rails are difficult to prep by media blasting. The POR product is OK, but after 20 years comparison in the rust belt, I'm confident with power coat.
