I've read in a few places that the front shaft from a 91-94 explorer will work after being shortened. Is this accurate? Any other applications that will work? I plan on hitting the pull a part yards Monday. Btw a custom 2" shaft built locally is around 600, vs shortening which is 80.00.
Thanks
Greg
Update...works great.

Which transfer case are you going to run? The 2" shaft was a needed item when I did it with the stock Dana 20 and the 1-piece adapter (so long ago it was still the late AOD part number, before there were specific 4R70W adapters). Even then I was still worried about balance weights in the wrong place that might still hit.

Never had an early Explorer front shaft to compare.

If you are not rushed for time, put the transmission and transfer case in and bolt up an Explorer shaft and see if it will clear as it goes up.

Other options, NP205, Atlas, maybe even full width front axle can change clearance issues. Running the 2-piece adapter (ZF adapter behind a factory 4WD tailhousing) might make clearance better

I'm using the Dana 20. Everything is in and running great, just time for a front shaft. I tried the factory shaft, but at 2.5" diameter tube...it's a no-go. I'll see if the explorer shaft will work..it should.

I’m running tom woods front and rear driveshafts. Front fits fine with the 4r70/dana 20 combo. Once I took the measurements and sent those with my order, I think I had the new driveshaft in like a week at my house.

What diameter front did you order?

TBP's stocks their 'HD' units (Tom Woods) for most all configurations, including the 4R.

UPDATE... The front shaft from a 91-94 explorer will work very well after being shortened. In addition, Looks like a front ds from an 87-01 Cherokee will work too.

I used one from a late 90s cherokee, I shortened it myself and didn't even balance it with no problems. It's just for when 4x4 is engaged and I only use 4x4 to get unstuck.
