Fuel gauge stuck on F

Have gauge stuck on past full. When ignition turned off, goes back to Empty. When wires unplugged from sender, goes to empty. Checked Ohms on sender unit and it read 8.1. Knew it wasn’t full - it held 4 more gallons, still read 8.1 after filling up.

Thinking sending unit is bad? If so, how to replace? Do I have to take the tank off the replace?

This is an aftermarket tank.

either bad or it's grounded somewhere. Not hard to replace but yes, it's from the top so have to drop the tank at least enough to get it. Prob easier to keep track of miles and make a list of other things to do at the same time.
