Funny “fixes” and jerry rigging?

This started as a wanted post for seat mounts. But then I decided I need to show what I’m replacing. The driver seat was mounted with galvanized fixture/conduit boxes and the passenger, well, one stock mount and what looks like one post base and joe. I’m all for adapting and overcoming, but generally not with mounting my seats to this thing. Then I realized that’s what I love about old trucks. It’s both frustrating and rewarding to see stuff others have done to your rig before you. I had a f100 with a little compass and levometer and they were about my favorite things on a vehicle ever. Wiring customizations have been my least favorite however. Does anyone else have pics or stories of these things on their Broncos?

The very first night I had my Bronco the two mounting bolts for the outside-front front seat bolts ripped right through the mounting holes. Here is a picture of where I fitted a block of aluminum with tapped holes (sides to keep it in place and bottom for the actual seat bolts) that's still holding together 11+ years later. Can you say GHETTO??? ;D:cool:

Oh, I forgot to mention to get the block into the channel I cut it open from the top and peeled it back like a can opener and then banged it back into place. I thought I had a pic but I can't find it. So I owe you guys that pic. It looks WAY worse from the top too!!! haha :p

You probably don't want to know about the friend of mine who drove a car home on the windshield washer squirter. Those pump will make about 35PSI which is enough to drive an EFI engine. Gallon of gas in the washer reservoir and hold it in wash. Made it the couple miles back to his house. Also the car was missing brake rotors in the front. That's not even the propane in the A/C system, 2x6 wood block suspension lift, the rewire job with only 1 spool of red wire and a handful of alligator clips.

We did that in Moab for the Bronco Safari in '02. Guy in a Land Rover didn't want to bend or get dirt on his owners manual, so left it back at camp (on purpose!) along with his tools (which he also didn't want bouncing around and maybe getting bruised and dirty%).

Since we could not find the fuel pump safety reset button without the manual, we took a water bottle, used some vacuum line and a spare ARB fitting, filled the bottle with gas and I sat in his passenger seat and got him back into town and to the other side to his riverside campsite.
But the engine running decently seemed optional, since I apparently did not develop the proper fuel pressure squeezing the bottle into a vacuum fitting on the intake plenum.:p
In town we didn't want to stop, so our group of Broncos ran block at stop signs and lights, and got us through without stopping.
Fun times...

Getting out to the road was a combination of towing and squeezing the bottle.
Here buddy Jerry with the strap hooked up on the way out of the hinterlands...

Cut out group's planned outing short, but plenty of scenery no matter where you looked.

Back in Detroit in the early '90s I had a '69 rust bucket wagon, reinforced the pedal hanger with a length of 4x4 with drywall screws between the hangar and the cowl.

Drove to the scrapyard late one day, they were closed. Unbolted the rusty roof and flipped it off by the front gate.

Ahh... the folly of youth.

Back before you could get a new custom dash layout made I made mine with old Highway sign. Cut all the hacked up center out and used a piece of the sign to re-make the holes for all the switches and bezels in the stock location, put gauges across where the radio would have gone, did away with the speaker grill and ash tray. Of course I reduced the level of "Jerry rigging" by having the words on the sign to the inside.

Propane is actually a good refrigerant if wasn’t flammable.

It leaked. But that was when the camp stove propane cans were $2 a pop and R12 was getting hard to get and took a license. It was really cold A/C. The low pressure switch went bad and he ran a jumper wire so it ran all the time. But it didn't freeze up because he overfilled it with oil. The excess oil hurt the thermal transfer enough to keep it from freezing up.

He knew enough to keep it running. It didn't have enough power to kill itself. Was too poor to get anything better. Most of this stuff was done at home so it would run good enough to leave, not fixes on the road to get home.
