Gas Tank Access Plate

Anybody ever cut a hole in the floor to access the top of the tank? I've got a 23 Gal tank from one of the Bronco houses and I've had that flipping thing in and out so many times I can't count working on the fuel system. Now I need to get the sender out to test it and see why the gas gauge isn't working correctly. Needless to say I don't want to drop this tank for the hundredth time.

I was just thinking about how to build a nice plate into the floor to access the gas tank electrical connections and removeable plate.

Any ideas or am I crazy?

probally not the dumbest mod i have ever heard of. I dont see where it would hurt if you made a nice access panel for it to close/ seal it up. If you have flooring of some sort you woulnt even know its there!

Just missed another thread all about that in the past couple of days. Don't remember the title, but a quick run through the last few days of threads should bring it up.

Basically, lots of people have done it. I'm going to as well, but have not done it yet.
The most recent thread has some decent pictures included as well, so well worth checking out.

OK, thanks. I did a search but didn't come up with anything. I'll have to just do some scrolling. Don't want to re-invent the wheel if people have done it already and had good success.

I've done it, one of the best mods I've done and so easy. I only took mine out 99 times, not as many as you but close. I can post a picture Friday as I'm not home right now. Basically cut about a 6x6 hole with a cutoff tool, welded 4 tabs along the edges, drilled 4 holes and thought, what took so long to do this. I found a piece of thin foam to use between the floor and access plate so it doesn't rattle. So much easier than dropping the tank. You won't be sorry you did it.

Would love to have some pics when you get back where you can send them. I appreciate it.

I've done it and used it at least three times.

I just took a good piece from an old floor and cut it larger than the access hole. I welded some nuts to the underside of the new floor, put some thin weather stripping on the cover and bolted it in place.

I have an access hole in my floor for the 23 gallon tank. I cut a nice neat little square in the floor. Across two of the lower portions I put a piece of steel bar that stretched from one side to the other with about 1.5" of overlap. I put holes in the cross piece and nutserts in the bed to hold it down. A very very very good mod if you have an intank fuel pump/pickup filter.

After seeing Paul's post, I am going to modify my hole to match. Looks good that way.

My 76 celica had that from the factory

THe chebby
Pickups should come with it since their pumps fail so often

This is what I'm working on at the moment as linked above, and a couple extra pics.
Here's some dimensions for those who have the BC tank:
From the fender well

Close up of dimensions from fender well

Dimensions from rear most rear seat bolt

Cover I'm making that I'll use a foam seal with, and fours that use the typical Ford clips that slip over sheet metal.

Hope this helps,
Tyler

This is a common mod on GM Avalanches due to that fact. My pump fixed under warrranty billed 1100 due to hrs dropping tank.

Here's my pics, but it looks like you don't need them, mines the same as the others. You will be so glad you did it and wonder why you hadn't done it earlier.

The thread linked above was me from last week - I ended up cutting the panel but have not yet got around to replacing the cutout piece and making it into an easily replacable/removable door. Will be easy enough though. Was thinking about putting a hinge on it but not sure yet. Was thinking about mounting a switch to the fuel pump in there so when I park it at the airport I could disconnect the fuel pump relatively easily. doubt anyone trying to steal it would take the time to figure that out
