Getting ready

Hey guys, I'm getting ready to start my efi conversion. I'm starting with a fresh rebuilt 302 out of a 92 mustang. It'll have a little more power than it did stock. It already has the lower portion of the intake, so I need to buy the upper. I'm planning to run a stock distributor and coil for the 92 5.0.
I'm keeping the np435. I am also planning to buy a new loomed wiring harness from Toms. I've started making a list of parts I will need. I plan to use as many new parts as I can.
I don't feel as intimidated as I did when I first decided to do the efi. I have a new 23 gallon tank that I plan to use with an in tank fuel pump.

I have a few questions about this conversion:

1. My bronco has the stock wiring. Should I rewire it before attempting the efi conversion?
2. I'm running a manual transmission. Do I need a specific computer for the manual transmission?
3. I want the intake to pull air from the passenger side. Can the intake be mounted either way?
4.What injectors should I use?

I'm going to have a ton more questions to ask. I will try to search for answers before asking questions.

Def not an expert and people with more knowledge will chime in
1 if your stock wiring is good just leave it, my Eli was in addition to the stock harness
2 I think the computers are interchangeable , I know for and auto you can use either one maybe not the other way around
3 on a mustang HO intake the air comes from the pass side, on a SD lo po motor it comes from the drivers side. Why do you think you have to switch it around
4 stock injectors

Upper intakes can be flipped either way, but you might have to extend some wires.
Computers are specific although they might interchange you could get some idle issues. Stick with a manual computer if you can.
Wiring if good is fine as your setup is a stand alone system for the EFI
I would leave the stock 19lb injectors in unless you plan on changing the size of your throttle body.
Good luck and keep us posted.

You will have interference between the upper intake and the fuel pressure regulator if you swap sides. Easy fix is to use HO fuel rails.

Match the injector size to the computer you use.

How do I match the computer to the injectors?
What is a stand alone system?

Stand alone to me means the wiring system operates your EFI and doesn't tie into all your other accessory stuff. You only splice in a few wires to make it operate.
As far as the computer I would match it to the year of the engine you have. IE 92 5.0 manual trans. Get a computer from the same type vehicle.

If you do a little more research on here It will help you understand more. Computers are set to run a certain size fuel injector. I believe most mustang computers are set for 19lb injectors but I could be wrong. A stand alone system means the computer and wiring harness to run the engine are independent of your main wiring harness. The a9P computer is for auto trans and I think the manual is a9L. Go to bc website at the top of the page and look up efi swap thats a good starting point.Maybe someone on here could give you some pdf files for old ford fuel injection, that would really help.

Thanks for the info. I know this is not going to be an easy project. I will try to document as I go. I hope it works out OK. Definitely going to be a learning experience.

1 leave it, all you need from it is a start and run wire
2 computer are interchangeable, the wire harness is set for each type of computer , slight wiring difference, trans in the vehicle does not matter.
3. use the HO and put it on the side you want
4yes, stock for what the computer came with 19lbs is standard EFI HO mass air.

Fuel injectors are not matched to the computer. Fuel injectors are sized for the amount of fuel needed to support the power output of the engine. A stock 5.0 mustang made 225 HP and used #19 injectors. The 1993 Cobra made 235 HP and used a #24 injector same as the lighting with a 5.8 making 240 HP. 2nd generation lighting with a supercharged 5.4 made 360HP and used #42 injectors. Select the size injector for the amount of power you anticipate making.
Fuel injectors are matched to the MAF calibration. Make sure the MAF is calibrated for the size injector you choose. A9L or A9P computer are great and will work for you regardless of the transmission. Theres a few articles in setting up the factory harness. If you can't find any you like, shoot me a PM and I'll send you copies of ehat I have. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

I don't have a donor car for this project, so I will need everything. Which is no big deal I guess, because I plan to run as many new parts as I can.
Can you guys suggest which parts I should buy new, and which parts I should buy at a salvage yard?

O2 sensors are the only things I would buy new. I would rebuild the injectors.

Just make certain you are wired correctly depending on the computer you use (auto/man) as it could fry your PCM.

Do I have to replace my current radiator? When I bought this truck it came with a brand new aluminum radiator installed. I read that the 5.0 efi is reverse flow.

How did you efi guys run your fuel lines? What did you use for your lines from the tank to the manifold? I have seen the rolls of tubing from summit and other stores. I want it to look clean and be safe.
