I don’t like my 1T GM TRO setup and want to convert to heim.

Am I gonna need to start from scratch and order new tube or maybe I can get away with finding heims threaded same as tie rod ends?

As far as having the knuckle reamed for those large 1T tie rods, what’s the better play here to get heims on em? I haven’t seen an adapter as large as 7/8.

It's sloppy and I need to an under instead of over to make my ram assist happier.

Heims have a different thread pitch than TRE’s. You’ll need to start with new tubes and bungs.

Well damn. Could you just lie to me and tell me what I wanted to hear?
Thanks for the heads-up.

Now I gotta figure out the knuckle side of the equation.

I believe the largest dia. of the taper is .75”, so you should be able to drill the knuckles the rest of the way with a 3/4” bit.

Sounds right. Haven't had the chance to even look at it. Appreciate the insight and enabling my lazy ass

I may try to cut out the existing welded inserts and replace if the length of the tube is sufficient. We'll see though.

Worst case, buy tubing for a new tie rod. Use the existing tie rod to make the drag link.
I made my heim steering with 7/8” heims. They last much longer than the 3/4” heims. I have plenty of clearance with 17” rims.

Hmm. I have heims and would rather have the big tie rod ends.
Heims in my experience get sloppy much faster than tie rod ends and the taper lends itself to a more reliable joint.imo.

Should be able to drill them out
GM 1 ton taper (.75" large end of taper, .68" small end)

Also make sure to get some decent heims the cheap ones can wear out very quick (AKA have a black seal).

Not necessarily. I have FK heims on my steering and track bar. They were originally installed in 2002 and have who knows how many miles, they have out lived 2 previous builds, so its relative. I will say heims are noisier than TRE's.

Correct FK hiems are great ones, that last a long time, I just now the OP has habit of getting cheaper quality products. I was specifically mentioning the Barnes economy heims, they have a black seal/wiper on the heim. The seal/wiper has a tendency to fall out, allowing dirt to get into the ball. Causing them to loosen up.

Those are perfect for working with an unmolested knuckle. In my case, it's reamed out for the larger GM 1T tie rods. Frankly, I'd like to find an adapter like that for my configuration in case I ever decided to go back to tie rods.

Yeah, BCB seems to have them for the Ford knuckles, but I seem to remember seeing one of GM TRE applications at some point. I thought it might be Ballistic or Poly Performance, but don't see them there, so if it was, it's not listed now. I was hoping someone else might know who made them for a GM TRE taper application...seems like it should be a thing IMO.

What are your machining capabilities?

That there is funny. :)

Chuzie. It's easy to splice into the tube to make it longer. Add solid rod inside, plug weld it after adding whatever length of tubing you need over the solid rod, butt weld it. Super stout. Beats buying 5' of DOM at $20/ft. Stuff has skyrocketed the past 2 yrs.

These are for the larger tie rods, f150 and 1-ton.

These will allow you to convert back to tie rods after drilling.
