Going to the Crushers, SaddleUp & Second Chance do "The Crushers" rock test (pics)

For anyone that has been out to Brown's Camp in the Tillamook State Forest they probably already know about the Crusher Loops. These are a pair of loops off the side of a trail up there that are riddled with huge boulders. They vary from the size of bowling balls to the size of a small car. The Rock Buggies use this as their playground. Anyone that goes into these knows that more rigs break in there than ones that don't. Big clearance, big tires, and tough stuff are all needed for these. Several months ago we went in and watched other go in and play. That day 3 rigs took the challenge. One rolled, one busted the rearend, and the third was still in there after we left and the owner was on his way back to town for more parts (they had already robbed everything they could off the other rig they had that was there). On my last trip I ripped a hole through the sidewall of a tire on mine before I made it around the first corner. Today we decided to make a quick run out there and take the challenge agian. We only ran the top loop but we picked 2 different paths so there are a variety of different angles we hit to give eveyone an idea of the challenge this trail presents.

And more. This is when it started to get interesting. And yes, those close up pics of the differentials were taken at the same time. It took quite a while to work my way out of that pickle I was in but eventually I did. And No, I didn't pull the winch out. I did jack up the tires a few times to shove rocks under them and eventually we just tossed them in front or in back of the tires and let it suck them under. I walked it sideways several feet to get it out. Oh, and I have some new rock rash to show for it. A nice dent in the back from pinning the tire carrier against a big rock (The small car size) and I picked up a new one in the corner (Gotta get those cool corners BC sells ;D ). I should have fought for the original line I was going to take. Instead I let it take me in a different one which is what put me into this situation. :p

Second Chance took a different path to avoid the pickle I got into here. His path gave us some nice shots of him 3 wheeling though. Some of you may recall we put this rig together in 5 weeks right before SOB this year. It ran great out at SOB and performed well here too. (This is the first time he really pushed it hard to see what it would do since we took it easy for SOB)

Quite a blast. I didn't get by unscathed though. My steering box has been working at the frame for a while which eventually showed itself. Last week I noticed it was popping and there was the death wobble I got at SOB during the trail run. I thought there was something going on up there but couldn't see it. Anyway it ripped one of the bolts right through the side of the frame. This may be an opportune time to move the frontend forward though since I'm going to have to pull the box off and plate it.

FWIW, I think we are going to plan another run in the next few weeks to tackle 7UP again. As soon as Bob gets another alloy axle I think that will be our next run. I'm also thinking about trying to get a bigger halloween run together in October.

That's more like the Trail of Death. Is the entire trail just like the mine field in your pics? Wow.

The loops are. We took the shorter upper one yesterday. The lower one goes about 3 times as far down to the bottom. When we walked in it was about the length of 3 city blocks to get all of the way down there. Our rocks get slick when they are wet so it would be even more interesting after a good rain.

Man those are some great pics! You guys have a couple of awesome rigs. I'm sitting at my desk right now looking at those pics, and think I'm about to tip the desk over! ;D (shwing!)

Hey Saddleup, where did the anti-axle wrap device come from? Looks pretty functional without limiting travel.
It's one that I designed. I still need to test it more before I decide whether to market it or not. If I do then I'll probably sell them for about $200 each.

Where exactly in WA is this?
It isn't. It's in Oregon in the same general area we take people out on trail runs for SOB. (Vancouver, WA is pretty much a suberb of Portland, OR) So far we have avoided this trail along with 7Up during the SOB runs because of how many rigs they both claim. (There's a short video from 7Up in my gallery) If your interested in getting up this way to run these let me know and I'll organize something. We might even be able to get Mike (ORVP) to come out and shoot some video. He probably would have gone this time except it was kind of a spur of the moment deal.

Hmmm... Might be able to get Pigpen out there as well.

Nah, were pretty tired of dragging Tom's Butt all over the trail!
;D ;D ;D

I would love to get up that way, but Southern OR is about a 16hr drive for us SoCal guys. Maybe do a two week trip next year and fit it in though.

You can figure a bit more than 16 hours then since it's up in Northwest Oregon. Where else were you planning to go during that 2 weeks?
