I may have to relocate out of so cal in a year or so. I've got a handful of friends who moved to kentucky and love it. What are the requirements to register my trucks as far as smog or safety checks? I've got a 66 and 72 bronco and a 72 suburban 4x4.

Kentucky has no safety checks per se. As far as licensing goes you will have to get a n out of state vehicle inspection done. You'll need your CA or out of state title, valid operators license and the vehicle at most likely the Sheriffs Office of the county to have an inspection conducted. The inspection consists of the vin on your current title matching the actual vin. The vin and odometer reading will be put on a VTR Form, after the inspection you submit in order to receive a KY title. After receiving the Ky title the vehicle can be licensed. I not aware of any smog checks except possibly the Louisville Metro Area or Northern KY. Smog checks had been discussed in the past in those two areas. At that time nothing was formalized. If you have any other questions drop me a PM.

Any bumper height restrictions. The 72 has a 3 1/2 suspension + 2" black to clear 35s. My main concern besides smog is e-brake. I have the caddy rear calipers and never spent the time to get it adjusted

No bumper restrictions or anything like that. As for things like an emergency brakes there is no type of safety equipment inspection required by the Kentucky Revised Statutes. I just recently retired from a 21 year career with a sheriffs office here and can tell you the only inspections we conducted were for people who had received traffic citations. The courts would require people to show proof that they corrected problems such as head lights being out or other inoperable lights, inadequate exhaust , cracked or broken windshields, etc. We would inspect the violation and provide documentation to the district court saying the problem was corrected. The only inspections of any motor vehicles here are commercial vehicles, commercial/public transit. Those vehicles fall under federal and state statutes.

Hey SteveL, we would love to have you!

My grandparents on mom's side lived in Morehead, Ky so my family has been based here forever. As an "army brat" we moved every year or two, so I've lived in Sumpter, SC, Chicago,IL, Clarksville, Tn, and even over in France when I was about 4 years old. I moved to Winchester, Ky about 1971 and married, etc and been here ever since. I love Kentucky!

Norm

I've got a '66 also.

Easy to get everything changed over. No smog checks, bumper height laws headlight height laws, or other stupid stuff. I live down in the southeast part in London, Ky. Where are you looking to relocate to?

When I moved from California to Kentucky the sheriff's deputy took about 60 seconds to look at my truck, signed the paper and off to the DMV I went.

I live in Pikeville and you should see some of the junk on the roads, busted windshields and such.
