Heim joint steering system

Okay - I decided to upgrade my front axle to a Dana 44 from the Dana 30 - which would also give me disc brakes up front. As I understand the steering system from my old axle is not large enough for the Dana 44. I have decided to use a Heim system from Ruff Stuff group here on the site. Their kit - while well made is a universal kit - so I have to cut the tubes to length. As i do not have an original - my 44 came without I do not have anything to measure against to cut the tube for both the steering and tie rod side - can any of you all give me a measurement or a clue? I understand that the knuckles are approximately 51" - so how much travel should I allow - the adjustment out to say all closed 49 and up? What about the tube that goes to the pitman arm - what size should that be?

You really shouldn't need more than 1" total travel in the drag link. Once you set toe that's it, it's not like you will be constantly adjusting it.

Set the tires (knuckles) square to each other.
Bolt the heims to the knuckles
Thread on the tube stubs and jam nuts
Measure the distance between the weld surfaces and there you have it. Make sure to subtract just a bait from square and you'll be fine.

I screwed the heim joint into the nut all the way and then backed them out 5 full turns. Then like Hozr said, bolt heim to the knuckles and place one heim joint into the tubing. mark the other and and cut.

76-77 is wider then earlier ones.

Yep, square up the front end and center the steering box and measure the same way.
