HELP!! Auto Steering Shifter Collar

Watched the WH videos on YouTube till I was blue in the face and cannot get the collar to slide all the way down on the outer column. Had a buddy push the collar and turn from 10 - 2 while I manipulate the shift linkage in the engine bay.

What am I doing wrong???

not sure, but I hope someone chimes in quickly. my shift collar just went to hell, just got done ordering the replacement today.
