Well after 9 months my wifes 73 is taged and ready for the road. Or so I thought. This is the problem I am having. It is a stock Motorcraft carb. Truck will start and idle fine. Will rev up fine in neutral but when sifted it gear and a little gas applied it dies. After a its warmed up it will stop doing this but will still hesitate on acceleration. I can drive the truck for about 5 minutes at around 30 mph then its starts to sputer and dies. Seems like its out of fuel. The tank is full. Let the truck sit a few minutes and it will start right up. Run and then die after 5 minutes or so. What gives? I was thinking a clogged fuel filter? I am looking for suggestions before I start working on the carb.

sounds like your carb is running out of fuel kinda.. almost like one of your fuel lines has a kink in it or your fuel filter is due for a change. is there any fuel spots / signs of leaks anywhere along the fuel lines?

Sounds like a stuck float not letting enough fuel into carb or maybe low fuel pressure/bad fuel pump.

I'm thinking of a few possible items to look at.
1. let the vehicle warm up issue prior to warm up are not always issues but I would check your choke for proper adjustment and make sure its fully opening when the vehicle is fully warmed up as it could be the cause of your issues.
2. a vacuum leak check all your bolts on the carb and manifold to ensure they are tight.
3. your accerator pump linkage may need adjustment there should be a couple of different holes to choose from on the rod or the rod can be bent a little to ensure that fuel is squirted when the throttle shaft is moved.
4. A new fuel filter is always a good bet. doesnt hurt to change it out its easy and cheap.

Got a chance to mess with this and this is what I found so far. The fuel lines at the tank that are rubber before they turn to plastic were real soft and so was the one from the pump to the plastic line. I thought they may have been colapsing .I replaced them and the truck still did the same thing as I drove it the time it would run between running out of fuel got shorter and shorter. I have a clear filter and could watch the truck run out of fuel. So I pulled the tank this afternoon. The fuel pick up screen was falling apart and the pick up tube was clogged solid problem found I think. So I ordered a new sending unit and we will see what happens in five days when I get the new one. After i droped the tank I also found my frame rails next to the tank are rusted thru!!! Great more work. I still have a bad hesitation of idle but I will attack that once I can keep the truck running for more than 5 min!

I have an original metal tank sitting in the garage right now that came with my Bronco. I was told it worked fine (including sending unit) before it was replaced with a plastic tank. You can have it if you want to make a run over the bridge.
