this is a quick paint job to change the color to freshen it up.
body needs lots of work that im not going to do, so this is not a quality project.
I will sand it and wipe it clean so the paint bonds, other then that no other prep work will be done.
should i use rattle cans, if so what kind, do i use rustoleum?
should i try dupli-color paint system i see on the auto parts shelf?

I know a lot of guys do rattle can paint jobs , but I cringe at that idea a little , unless you are not equipped for a sprayer at all.
If you have a little air compressor , buy a cheapy spray gun and some cheap paint and spray away.
Possibly get a better product for less than all the rattle cans would cost.
Maybe try the cans of rustoleum and thin and spray them ..... or there was a thread here awhile back about thinning and rolling on the rustoleum and getting good results.

Get a cheap High Volume Low Pressure gun from Harbor Freight. I just bought one for $20.00 to spray primer on my fiberglass body. It worked great. I would then go to a Tractor Suppy Company and buy some of their paint. It is cheap and looks pretty good. I painted an old ford with it and was pleasantly surprised.

I've been slowly slathering some hunter green rustoleum on with a foam brush. Results aren't all that great, but for a rusted out body I think it's fine. I honestly can't make it look worse than it does.

TSC paint , forgot about that , I have heard good things about that from Harley guys , car guys , offroaders , ETC.
Cheap but pretty decent.
I'm not sure what the minimum compressor you need is , but since you are not looking for show quality , try to do only a panel at a time and let the compressor recharge in between.
Thought about trying this myself , just to cover up the dingy paint I have now , but cannot afford the metal bodywork as of yet.

The duplicolor paint isnt that cheap once you add it up. Buy a cheapy HVLP paint gun and stop by your local automotive paint store and see what they have for can of color they messed up on mixing or someone didnt pick up for a steal of a deal. I get a lot from Carquest just east of 120th and I-25.

Thin it with some acetone until its about the consistency of milk. Then use a foam roller - one of those high density ones that are about 4" long and rounded at the end. That should get you much better results. $50 paint job

You might get paint cheaper than a paint store if you goto your local bodyshop. We always have a little paint left over. I then take the left over paint and put it in a gallon can. I have a gallon for all colors, silver, gold, red, blue, green. I use it for cut ins ect.
You can get a gallon of cheap clear and hardner for around $140

A spray gun will eat ALOT of cfm. Even an HVLP will uses alot of air. The HV in HVLP stands for high volume. The LP is the low pressure at the cap which is 10 psi compared to older guns which were around 40 psi. You will need at least 5hp and 60 galon tank at the minimum especially with a cheap HVLP gun. Just my .02

Any idea how many rattle cans it would take to cover a bronco?
Looks like what maybe the most price effective way is the roll on foam brush method.
Getting a bigger compressor for this cheap color change is out of the question.

Are you going to spray it? Would make for a cool build thread - take lots of pictures. What color are you going with?

I am going to roll it.
I will try and take pics before, during, after for everyone. Looks like it will take several coats and several hours between coats. So this project will take me a month or so. I only have time on the weekends to work on this and the time I have is very limted at that.
I will post results, but expect a month or so for the results.

Im not sure on the color yet, im leaning towards smoke gray.

Even Wally World has guns that can do an OK job. Cheaper than the Husky stuff at Home Depot/Lowes
