A word of caution. A little background. I am doing a major refurbishment of my 69 since I retired at the end of 2025 (400 hrs into it so far). I am basically replacing/upgrading everything. I went all out and bought a Lick Creek 20 gallon stainless steel fuel tank. Installation went beautiful. I am a gadget guy and purchased the Holley Easy Fuel Sender instead of using the ISSPRO sender that came with the tank. After installing Holley sender, tank and part of my exhaust system, I wanted to test the gauge and my Classic Instruments gauges. Put 5 gallons of fuel in tank, reads empty. I did a bunch of trouble shooting and finally hooked up the wiring to the ISSPRO in a 5 gallon bucket. Reads perfect! Now I read on their website “may not work in a stainless steel tank”. Please be very careful and check the operation with your tank if considering this sender. The Holley LIDAR idea is pretty good in the right tank. I did do the recommended bench calibration of the sender with the gauges before installation.

I was going to put the Holley LIDAR sender in a tank just because I thought it was something new with no moving parts. But a quick google search found many people having issues with it either not reading or not reading correctly. Went with the ISSPRO sender that was closest for the custom tank I had and never looked back. This was a few years ago and I said I’d give them a few years to iron out the kinks. Well sounds like they haven’t quite got them all ironed out.

So it should work in standard metal, and perhaps plastic tanks as well?
I wonder what the issue with stainless is? Is it a ferrous versus non-ferrous thing, or is it reflectivity? Or something else?
