How do I change out the gear on my EFI distributor?

I'm replacing the steel gear with a cast gear. Pushed out the pin that runs through the gear but the gear still doesn't seem to want to come off. Is there a trick to this or do I just pull out the BFH?

i wouldn't use a BFH, i'd worry about bending the shaft or killing a thrust washer. it needs to be pressed off and on. just take it to a machine shop, they can't be too expensive.

I used a propane torch to warm up the gear to get it to expand a bit and some light tapping with a hammer.

I think I saw in the past to put the unit in the freezer overnight and give it a try. Then slowly heat the gear and keep at it.......

I used this technique to get the old off and new on.

I used a gear puller. A few turns and it popped right off. Once it's off, polish the shaft real nice and the inside of the gear with an emory cloth or something of the like before you put it back on.

Not to hijack, but why are you putting on a cast gear? I thought the steel was the ones to use. I'm using an '97 explorer engine. Does that need a cast one  ?:?

Real men use their teeth

Seriously, heat, puller, shop press all work fine. What everyone else said...

Steel gear on yours. If Dukem Nukem is swapping EFI onto an engine with a flat tappet cam then he has to switch to a cast iron gear.

Same here, Autozone has the correct one.

Used a gear puller to get em off.

Duke, if you use you old dizzy the distributor gear to distributor base dimension is 4.035 or you could chew up the gear and cam.
