how much side to side movement should there be in neutral with the hurst 3 speed on the floor shifter? i was going through mine on the bench and it seems there is only like 1/2 inch movement to slide over to 2/3 gears? you really have to be carefull to move it over or you would miss gears? something dosent feel right? is this normal?

thanks,
james

It depends. Mine has very little side to side play in the 72 and more in the 67. What you describe sounds like my 72. As long as it shifts, who cares, right?

Not that I remember (edit - movement-wise, not adjustment-wise). Should be at least three or four inches at the knob. Maybe your pins are not lined up perfectly in the main body? Are you getting what looks to be full shifting function?
Or are you just using the short arm without the full lever attached? If not, you won't get your full working-range of movement.
You may know that already of course, but I thought I'd make sure. The short shift arm right at the shifter isn't going to move much, but 10" or more above that, and you get your inches. If the knob is only going 1/2" or so, then yeah, something's not quite right.

...is there any adjustments that could be made?

for sure there is "over-travel" adjustment for the fore and aft movement, but I don't remember anything that would increase your side-to-side movement within the gate.
Been a long time since I messed with one though.

ok somethings not right then, if you just move the shifter between r and 1 you can actually put it into 2 and 3 without noticing too much movement to the side,
its 1/2 to 3/4 inch at the ball on end of shifter handle

You're closer in age to her sister, Jamie Novack. Know the name?
