Yeah, because we all know that the way that they come from the factory is most definitely the safest way to do things. %) %) %)

Oh, and BTW, they do sell harnesses that are street legal.

I won't argue your first point. but i will argue the legal harness issue. There is only one company out there that I know of that makes street legal harness and they are vehicle specific. Meaning they have harness designed for specific vehicles and if your lucky enough to own one you can buy one of there dot approved street legal harnesses for your vehicle. The problem with 4 and 5 pt harness is most people don't know how to install them properly. You have to have a roll bar designed to acomidate them. with a cross bar across the back to attach to at the proper hieght. Now how is a cop to know if you have the know how to install a aftermarket seat belt such that it doesn't crush you when your in an accident? How is he to know if your roll bar is up to additional stress that an accident can impart on it and if it attached properly to the vehicle. What he does know is that at some point in time there was some engineering done on the factory belts and mounting locations and someone though it was safe enough.

Now i believe seat belts tickets are stupid if you don't wear em i don' t care. Me personally I wear them, if you get in my car you wear them also. Getting a ticket for not wearing one or haveing equipment that is better then factory is a stupid tax no one should not have to pay.

back to op getting pulled over for seat belts suck, I agree. And getting a ticket you had to fight is even more stupid. If you don't know that cars used to only come with lap belts you shouldn't be enforcing traffic laws. Thats not very obscure knowledge.

I was driving in a customers 56 VW beetle and got pulled over once, the officer almost had the car towed cause it didn't even have seat belts. I had to convince him that seat belt laws only apply if the vehicle was equipped with seat belts. Somehow I lucked out with my Karmann Ghia cause the seatbelts were the only option the original owner ordered.

Good points. I shouldn't have said anything. Many times, I make the assumption that if people make upgrades to safety equipment, they will do the research necessary to do it themselves properly, or have somebody do it for them properly. I know that this isn't always the case.

After 50 years of driving with no seat belts, I ate the steering wheel in my dunebuggy last summer wearing lapbelts. First thing I did when I bought my Bronco was a rollbar so I could mount shoulder belts.

The law simply states that if your vehical was equiped with a seat belt then you have to wear it. This means factory seat belt. So at a bare minimum, if your bronco came with a lap belt then you must wear said lap belt.
what alot of people fair to realize is the calibur of law enforcement that you are dealing with. Nation wide, law enforcement is going to a trend of mandatory college graduates. Gone are the days when the men and women protecting you actually knew their a$$ from a hole in the ground. I'm not saying that all cops are dumb or that all 22 yo college kids are dumb. But the combination of the two does not inspire this guy.
Its not really the kids fault, I blame it on the dept administrations. Let me put this into perspective.
I've spent the past 5 years in the Army and in an interview not long ago, I had a gentle men in a nice 3 button suit, who was sitting next to 2 uniformed officers: look me boldly in the eye and ask me "what community services had i done in the past year."
This is the mentality of those that higher your law enforcement. So before we all go blaming laws and there interpritation. We need to take a good long look at ourselves and who we voted into office and their policies that they inforce. Because that is truely what shapes the world we live in.

Man you hit the nail on this one. I have hired 4 new officers in the last 5 years. They all have college degrees and have been thru the state accadamy. All but one has come in with the attitude that they are owed the job. They don't want to learn or even pay any dues. I worked night shifts for 5 years and now I can't make them work nights unless everyone works the same number of nights. I dred seeing what the U.S. is gonna look like in 20 years.
