Some of you who know me know I have been thinking of this for the past year or so. Well, the timing seemed right so I went ahead and did it.

Not being very experianced at shopping for a rock, I debated about taking my GF along to see what she prefered, but I decided to wing it and go with my gut. There were so many styles, shapes and sizes the choices seemed endless. Some of those were huge and did not seem very practial, so I decided on multiple, smaller stones.

I'm sure she will love them! ;D

I would have liked to have gotten a bit bigger one since size and weight are very important, but these were the biggest that the loader could get in the truck!

These pics are of the first of three 25 ton loads on Saturday. I also had about 25 ton of some nice smaller rock that was already onsite which I moved and added to the new pile. One more load supposed to come Tuesday to finish it off for now at 125 tons.

I used a skid loader (Bobcat type) to move some of the smaller stuff. I was able to work it hard and shift/roll/pivot a couple of the bigger ones, but not much! I did end up with pretty decent placement for the equipment I had to move it.

After I get the last load in I will see if there is a need to rent something bigger to reposition them. Maybe a large excavator / trackhoe with a thumb on the bucket so we can pick and place them just where we want them.

I've had the word out on finding some rocks for about a year now, and finally got a call on Thursday, so the timing was perfect to get my new place "decorated" for it's first club event! Crep paper, streamers and ballons? %) I think not! I know what my Bronco buddies really like! ;D

If any of you are coming to the MEB Wrench & Roast this weekend, bring your rig and try it out!

Drew, will I be attending the MEB Wrench and Roast this weekend, or your funeral? I need to know what to wear. Thanks.

Hey that one in the middle appears to be a "Princess Cut" rock. ;D

Nice work.

Nice selection, Drew. I'm sure your GF will "love" your choices. Did the neighbor across the road see this yet?

She did not see the same humor in this as I did when I joked about it the other day. I have not sent her a link to this yet, so bring a change of clothes! ;D

Yes, she thought my new rock pile was pretty cool. I might have to let her make the first run on it with Iron Bear! No, the neighbor has not been over to see them yet. They will be over to the Wrench & Roast.

I'd love it if my main squeeze got me a rock like that....but the way this yard has been gaining sink holes that turn into swamp, I think that the nice rock would just fall through the earth. That or it would just make the entire island sink. LOL

With the size of those larger ones, does this mean that you are thinking about working on the trail rig?:-X It might be to much of a challenge for iron bear:p

looks awesome!!!!! it's amazing how much a few of things weigh...

i am thinking about doing the same thing on some property that my wife and i just bought... the dozer is coming this week so we will have to see what happens...she wants to start a new house and all i can think about is where to start cutting some trails;D ;D depending on how quick my buddy with the dozer wants to get started I might not be able to make it this weekend:cry: when you can get a dozer for fuel and beer  i want to try to get as much done as possible..

Don't buy the ring yet. Once they cut and polish those things they get considerably smaller.

We have been thinking of doing the same thing. Can I ask approx. how much you had to spend on the rock?

I put some feelers out to locate some rocks and when I spoke with a friend who runs dump trucks for a living he said I basically had 3 options:
  • Buy from a quary and pay to truck it in (Very expensive since the quary charges more per ton for big ones than thay do gravel and trucking is $75 per hour including loading/driving/unloading)
  • Find free rocks and pay to truck them in
  • Find a contruction site close by that needs the type and size of rock I want hauled off site and let them use my place as a dump site, free rocks, free hauling.

Obviously I wanted option three, but that could take a very long time to get that to come together. The friend of mine had a buddy of his who also runs dump trucks for a living and was having some of his land cleared for for a pond and pasture and had a bunch of these piled up (probably 10-12 loads worth).

I had to pay $150 a load, basicly to cover paying the guy who is clearing the land to use his big front end loader to load the truck and some fuel cost for the truck. I guess the loader costs about $100 per hour.

So, to answer your question, about $600 for the 4 loads I'll be getting from there. Now that I have a pile started, I'll keep my eyes open for the totally free ones to add to it.
