In the market for a bronco hauler.... Thoughts?

So I don't pull my broncos on a trailer very often but when I need to I need something that will be able to do the job...

I thought I bought my dream truck in February 2020 after getting a 2017 Tacoma Off-Road... It is an awesome truck in every way EXCEPT for its ability to pull anything. It has a max tow capacity at 6800 so I thought it would do okay just every now and then pulling something short distances. I was wrong tho. The autmatic absolutely hates having a trailer. I could probably use it for a while but everytime I've hooked up the trailer I have felt like the truck was being overworked, especially the trans, and that it wouldn't last long if I continued to do so... I've been considering going to a full size rig for a while but haven't made my mind up until an unfortunate incident and a bad deal with a body shop...

I messed the drivers door up on the truck a while back doing something totally dumb. It wasnt awful but being that its a newer truck and I have full coverage I paid the deductible to get it fixed. The body shop, Autosport Innovations in Greensboro, seemed awesome and very detail oriented when I took the truck for an estimate. I ultimately decided to go with them and after two weeks they called for me to pick up. Upon arrival the truck was parked outside and in the shade. I noticed immediately from 25 ft away that it was covered in dried compound. Upon closer inspection I found multiple issues; trash in the paint, awful tape lines that look like paint peeled up with the tape, decal installed incorrectly, trash under decal resulting in a bubble, and a seal not replaced that insurance covered. I also noticed the paint was slightly off but it was hard to tell in that lighting and honestly once I noticed all the details I didn't even stnad back and look at the color that thorough. All the bodyshop could say is that the insurance company didnt pay us enough to do the job right... I left the truck and talked to the insurance company who sent someone to look at the truck. They agreed to pay a little more moeny to redo the decals and allow time/money for buffing and trash cleanup in the paint. Th truck really needed to be repainted to be done right tho.

I went back two weeks later to get it a second time and not to my surprise they hadn't repainted it so alot of the tape lines were still noticable and crappy. They installed the new decals alloted by the insurance company incorrectly and tried to fix it by trimming one to match the other. They cut it crooked and scratched the new paint in the process. There is still trash and other defects in the paint as well. I mentioned my dissatisfaction with the work and with the amount of time it took to do the poor quality job. The owner of the shop was getting frustrated and started mumbling under his breath at a distance from me. I again expressed that a "premier bodyshop" should do premier work which would mean that I never even noticed there was paintwork even done. I know that paint and body is tough work but when I pay a professional I expect the job to look like a pro did it. I ultimately came to the conclusion that the shop wasnt going to be able to do the job correctly and the only way for me to get my truck back was to pay them the deductible and try another route to get it fixed right. I asked for a reciept and followed an employee inside only to find the owner inside badmouthing me and my particularness. I told him he was very unprofessional and that I'd never bring a car back or suggest their shop to another person. He then became irrate and told me to get the F off his property or he was going to thorw me off. I was still waiting for a receipt and told him so as he continued to get louder and louder. I was finally handed a receipt and proceeded out the door with the owner following behind me still running his mouth. I lost my cool as I hit the parking lot and told him to F off and whatnot. He then proceeded out the door threatening to kick my ass and yada yada. His employee and older guy had to get inbetween us and plead with the shop owner to go inside. I so wish I had thought to record the interaction.

I got the truck home and went to look at a bronco out of town to get my mind off of the whole deal. When I stopped at a rest stop and saw my truck in a new lighting scenario I noticed that the entire paiontjob is way off from the original color. You can see exactly where he faded into the back door. The entire front half of the drivers side is a couple shades different than the back of the truck. This is something I can't live with so I called my insurance company and they basically told me they paid for the work and closed the file and for me to kick rocks. I don't knwo what else to do to get the issues fixed but I am so unhappy with the work I am considering just selling the vehicle outright to a dealer. Toyota offered me 1700 more than I paid for it a year ago. Not sure what I will do tho.

My questions are... Has anyone traded in a vehicle and actually gotten what KBB claims is the trade in value?

I want an F150 I believe but I am torn between the 5.0 or the 2.7 Ecoboost. I have read that most ecoboost problems are not really problems anymore with the 2nd generation motors... I won't be pulling often but if I get something that can pull I will be making some of the western show trips. Im trying to keep my price for a full size around 40k but could go up to 45 or so... I will say it sure is hard to find an F150 with 6.5 foot bed... Who on here is pulling broncos on a trailer with an F150? Are you satisfied? What motor do you have?

Man I hate hearing stories about crappy body shops but it seems to happen a lot. Sorry about your experience. Not much you can doo besides trade it in or pay to get it fixed your self.

As for trade in, right now you can easily get KKB full trade in value on trucks, the used truck market is super hot.

As for towing with an F150 that I have a bunch of experience with and I can say they will do a great job towing your bronco. I have towed with both the 5.0 and the 3.5 ecoboost. I personally would stay away from the 2.7 eco if you are towing, my neighbor had one and well it didnt last a year before it blew a head gaskets and basically trashed the motor. That little motor has to work really hard when you are towing with it. and the gas mileage is not that much better than the 3.5 or 5.0 in the real world. I got about 17mpg out of both the 5.0 and the 3.5, my neighbor would get about 19 out of the 2..7. I have a F150 at work that has the 5.0 and we towed with it for years, never had single engine problem and towed trailers with well over 9,000lbs on it. I had a 2016 F150 with the 3.5 eco and it was a great truck, towed boats and trailers with it and hauled a few broncos too. I bought a bronco up in Long Island and towed it back at 70 through NY and NJ like it wasnt even there. And the truck was a blast to drive when it was empty one of the fastest truck i have ever owned.

I now have a 2019 F250 with the 6.7 diesel and well it is the best towing truck I have ever had, but if you are not towing often and not towing near max payload of the F150 I would stick with the F150. It a great truck.

I would agree on all accounts above... The 5.0 is a fantastic engine all around, and the EcoBoost in my experience is one or the other: Eco or Boost, you simply cannot have both simultaneously. I currently have a 2017 F250 with the 6.7L diesel as well, but came from a 2016 F150 with the 3.5L and it did just dandy hauling my junk around, even being lifted on 35" BFG A/T's:

You bet, $1K more, BUT:

-I'm a neat freak and after 10 years the '95 Yukon still looked nearly new, and after 16 years the '05 Yukon looked new.

-one can't ignore what they were getting FROM me for the new Yukons and now the 2021 Chev 2500HD ;D

I concur. I have had both, a 5.0 and a 3.5 and towed with both. The 5.0 done really well with 3.73 gears and got great mileage on 2 lane highways. Interstate wasn't too hateful but not as good as cruising 55. Like toby said, with the 3.5 you can eco or you can boost but you can't do both. The 3.5 I had my son has now and I could get pretty impressive mileage on the interstate and 2 lane highways but it would drop to single digits when towing (WV hills). I can't remember exactly what gears but they were somewhere around 3.08 I believe. My Superduty with the 6.7 is a dream to tow with.

Used car and truck prices are through the roof. 2017 GMC 1500 SLT Crew 4x4...bought new 43K (sticker was 54K). I was just offered 40K by a dealer. Straight purchase not buying anything. Was just a walk in the dealer offer. It has 20800 miles on it. All the value sites show value at between 41-45K tradein.

I was actually offered more cash out the door than what KBB claims its worth. About 4 grand more... The trade in on kelly blue book starts about 1000 more than the cash offer... I think I will probably take the money. I got Toyota to agree to buy it next week and let me put an additional 1000 miles on it so I can make it up to the Stroppe reunion... haha

I think I am leaning towards the 5.0 just so I dont have turbos to worry about... Plus V8s are awesome. They are few and far between compared to the 2.7 or 3.5s though. It's also not easy finding an F150 with a 6.5 foot bed. They are out there but very few compared to the 5.5...

If I had the budget for the 6.7 Super Duty I would be all over it...

I have had a lot of trucks and my last two have been 2500HD Duramax. Between the torque and brakes, they just do everything effortlessly that I need and I never worry about towing. They drive nice for every day and have the capacity needed. The upside is long term value is great on them as well.

Have you considered talking to a lawyer and suing your insurance company, as the law states that they're supposed to return the vehicle to a like-new condition for repairs? Depending on your insurance company, some require a little persuasion (aka threats) to do the right thing.

FWIW, I love my 2014 F250...it's a beast towing a trailer compared to anything else I've ever owned, and seems smoother in both the ride and transmission shifts than a friend's newer Dodge.

Sounds like you should trade it in and get that F150. You are right it is very hard to find a 6.5 ft bed. I had the the 5.5 on my 2016 F150 and to be honest I never really had an issue with it.

The used truck market is stupid right now. I was offered $62K for my 2019 F250 with 65,000 miles! Problem is you cant even get a new one with all the chip shortage issues!

Another vote for the F 150. I had an 18 with the 3.5 Eco Boost and now a 2020 with the 5.0. I am averaging 19mpg with the 5.0 and 21 with the 3.5. The 3.5 was more fun to drive, Both pull great and both get 9 to 10 towing my Bronco at 70 on the interstate on a 20ft. trailer.

Check out a Sloan Quik Load trailer made in Texas. I have one (since 1985) and it sure beats using ramps for this old man.

I can tow a Bronco on a flat trailer no problem with my Raptor, but if I hook up to my 24’ enclosed trailer it buries it on the bump stops. %) Time for another 6.7 I guess...

House,
I chewed up a set of factory bump stops before I became more aware. These make a world of difference:

OP,
I'm running with 37's, front at mid-perch and tow no problem with the 6.2. I realize you are not looking for a used Raptor, but they do make the F250 with the 6.2 still. It may be something to think about...though I think the 5.0 in a F150 will get a lot better fuel mileage.
