Is it a '70 or a '77?

I came across this one in town today. Body is '77-Gas tank doors, extra brace on back side of driver's headlight, bracket for charcoal canister under hood. Frame is '77-has single tank vent line/rollover valve running on pass side. Axles are '77-has y-steering, disks, sway bar bracket, 11"x2.5" rear drums, banjo housing. VIN tag moved to door post and has 1970 number, U15GLH98xxx. It has some nice custom touches like metal rear flairs, a third tank door, and wipers relocated to the bottom of windshield. It also has the chrome drip rail around the top. Still, I'd be wary of this one just because of the VIN switcharoo.

Even has a door on the passenger side. Not a bad find. Good for the later model features in a non-smog year truck.
Good for the potential buyer from CA.

You already looked at it then?

Yep. 777mechanic and I happened to pass by it after I showed him the rotting Denver Bronco parked down the street. We also found another '75-'76 Ranger that could have been a Denver. It had the blue top and the body was originally orange, dash still is. Not sure if any Denvers had the orange dash though.

hmm.. in kansas my 76 vin was only partially readable so the dmv put a vin tag on the door post even though the one on the glove box was still there. Still i bet the 70 vin was to get past california laws maybe. Question, does that bronco have 3 gas tanks?

Also the chrome around the drip says 1970 sport to me but I am not sure what years had that, I know my 70 sport has it but my 76 ranger does not.

The pass side has a gas tank door but the tank is not installed. The shifter in the console is for the C4 and the J-shifter was coming out the driver side of the tunnel.

The owner's father said all the work was done at High Country 4x4 which used to be a local EB shop. It's still around but caters to a less capable brand of 4x4s now.

I have never seen a gas door on the passenger side on a 77? Maybe it happened, but is this a 70 with that modification? I really wanted to do that on my 69 but I could not find a way to fit the doors I had with my Gorilla flares.

If they spliced in the gas door on the P/S then they could have also done the D/S. Its got lots of custom touches. Tilt column, seems like it could be an upgraded 70.

I will guess that with all the extensive body work that it is a 77 body on a 77 chassis, with a 70 hard top and vin#. I kinda like those rear flares, looks like a front fender was grafted in. if the running gear and engine is in good shape that might not be a bad deal.

It's a '77 body. It had the extension in front of the steering box on the core support ('73 and up) as well as the other things I mentioned.

The column was from a mustang (mid '70s-early '80s?) and the console could have been also. It had the correct pattern for a 3 speed auto.

Couldn't see it but the tank vent line and rollover valve running down the pass frame rail was pure '77. No other years were like that.

>>>> a good way to tell a 76-77 frame is to look for the revised larger trac-bar bracket on the frame.........

correct..
did you talk to the seller about it being a 77 chassis and body with a 70 vin?
seems like a low price for a rig with that much custom work on it?

Oh yes. All he knows is that it is registered as a '70. Didn't seem to know much about EB's.
