Making room for an electric fan

I couldn't keep cool enough with the mechanical fan so I put an electric fan on. It did ok but need a shroud to keep cool on the really warm days so I build my own. I bought the largest and thinnest fan I could find between Jegs, Summit and Speedy. I modified the radiator brackets a little to pull it closer to the support. Now I do not over heat on trails. The downside is that it doesn't allow as much air though while moving at higher on road speeds when its above 80 out so sometime I will be modifying the shroud with rubber flaps that will be pushed open at higher speeds.

Hi,

I'm running a 7 blade Ford fan behind the radiator and a big pusher in front of the radiator.

To make it fit, I notched the latch with my grinder to match the contour of the electric pusher fan, it was snug but fit.

I ditched the electric thermostat control on/off switch, I didn't like the fan turning on a random times when my 66 heated up. So I ran a toggle switch to my dash and turn it on from time to time while sitting in summer traffic here in Los Angeles.

Fast forward, I removed the stock latch and am no running a remote latch kit from BC which opened up heck of a lot of space between the grill and radiator.

Good luck with your Bronco and Happy Friday!

Between my water pump and the radiator isn't much room and I've had a custom super-low-profile shroud made with the biggest fan I can fit (with off-axis orientation from the water pump to allow more depth) but this fan just isn't cutting it while climbing.

So, I'm thinking I've gotta start cutting to move the radiator mounts forward.

Anyone have any input? Am I doing something wrong? The radiator mounts as-is are stock.

Thanks,

I really doubt anyone has had anyone has tighter fan parameters than I have.
A three groove crank pulley limits the rear a lot. The fan has to go forward. And id did it without moving the radiator. It's all about the fan hub spacer thickness. I couldn't find the right spacer so I had to make my own on a lathe.
And don't let anyone tell you to put in some sort of electric helper fan. It's just not necessary.
But, If you want to go that direction, nothing makes more space in front of the radiator than a remote hood latch.

They did a great job. Thanks for the contact. The owner is an old skool hot rodder. Cool Kat. Also wired the whole thing up for me.

I am running a 2 14in spal fans as pullers on a wide radiator and tons of air flow. Although it is better than my stock mech fan with a 4 core radiator, it is not as much better than I thought it would be. Fans come on quite often at 205. They usually stay on when running hard and keep it about 185-190. When they run it does stay cooler than the stock fan but not much. In my opinion, my set up would be the minimum when removing the mech fan.

When I bought the Bronco, it came with the RD radiator and two speed Derale fan with shroud. They would not fit. I removed the core support brackets. Had a friend weld brackets on radiator and then mounted them with some rubber bushings. Still not much room.

Not sure if this is what you were looking for.

What electric fan are you trying to run?
I just mounted this one for use with my 351W conversion. It's tight but I have a fat 1/4 inch clearance after moving/flipping the upper radiator mount brackets to the outside of the core.

Can you post pictures of your radiator mounts?

Sorry, guess I missed this.....Drilled out the spots holding the mounts in, made a spacer for the back side and welded them on the front.

 ;D

I got mine up just a bit high and they hit the bolt heads hit the inside hood lip. Not a big deal to me.......just putting it out there......I had them welded in place before I noticed....

I didn't flip my lowers because the angle with the tops moved and lowers in stock location gave me just a bit more room. My van front dress is makes things TIGHT

Its just a convenient spot to put the hood pins so I don't loose them when I have the hood open all winter... lol. usually fog lights fill the holes but I removed them with the front grill for better access.

I did the same thing. Drill 2 holes in the top of the bumper. Pull the hood pin, drop it in the hole. Hard to loose them that way. No loosing them on the bench, or the dirt, or accidently packing them away in the bottom of the tool box or any other I can't leave since my pins are missing moments.
