Ready to flame the newb?

Could I buy a fairly new Mustang and transplant the engine and tranny (auto) into my 1966 EB?

I am sure I can with alot of little tweeks, anything is possible...but

I guess, what I am really asking is...is there a way to easily get a newer EFI engine and tranny into an old 1966 EB from another Ford product? F150 even? Knowing the deals I see here and there on Craigslist it makes sense outside of getting a crate engine, tranny, etc...

I would even be happy not having 4x4 (blasphemy I know-but I'll be honest, I like the EB for looks and not the functionality of it as a true 4x4 trail rig and it'll be a scuba truck at best for its work load) since its just a road ride and pretty girl for summer cruising...

any ideas/suggestions? Thanks in advance...

Search the term 'coyote'. There are 3 threads I know of right now putting the new coyote 5.0 engine into an EB. Bknaus, gumby/NYbronco, and chuck at bc broncos. Plus the icon bronco that recently came out has one.

You could find a wrecked f150 with the motor and trans you want and swap over or buy the new engine from here: http://www.google.com/products/cata...a=X&ei=xy2EUK2WG8bbyQG86oGYBA&ved=0CGwQ8gIwAA

Then buy the other stuff needed from bc broncos.

If you want to use a legacy SBF the MAF IV EFI is a very popular swap. You can take the engine and transmission out of an 89 Mustang (or similar year range) for example and most of the conversion parts required are stock items if you contact the Vendors on this site.

Hey califanojon, welcome!
By late model, you could consider anything from '89 to present, but by "easy" that limits you to '95 and older.
In those cases, the engines are basically the same as the 289/302 that would have been found in the Early Bronco to begin with. Literally bolts in using the same motor mounts and bell-housing bolt pattern.
A few details to be careful of, to be sure. But the concept is very basic swap stuff.
Same holds true for the up-sized 351/5.8 engines, but you can't use the truck uppers because they're just too tall to easily fit under a Bronco hood. It's been done, but it's out of the simple area again.

Nothing wrong with a modern GM Ls engine at all! They run like gangbusters, but are not a simple install and would require many more mods, including either GM based transmissions and transfer cases or expensive adapters to make work.
Plenty of people have done the GM swap in the last 40 years, but nothing's as simple as sticking with Ford.

Like said though, do a very cursory search and you'll find all sorts of threads about modern Ford EFI stuff (usually OBD-1 vs '96 and later OBD-2) and members that have either swapped in the entire engine assembly, or just added the newer EFI intake stuff right off of the new engine to their original Bronco engines.
The biggest issue you seem to run into is if you're not careful when sourcing your parts and try to mix and match things you know nothing about first.
You can make practically any Ford 5.0 part work with another, but some aren't as well supported or as easy to make fit in a Bronco and play nice with each other electronically. But most do, with a little foresight.

Do you have a V8 or a 6-cylinder now? If a six, then there are some motor mount towers and location changes, but not a big deal. Kits are available too.

Good luck. And have fun. Can be a bit of work, but in the end you get a pretty decent running rig.

X2 on what Paul said, including the LSx swap. That gets a little more expensive since you need a kit from GM for the harness, EEC, etc. but it's a great engine. Got one in my DD 98 Camaro SS.

The most popular swap by far is the 302/5.0 or 351W/ 5.8 with the 88-93 Mustang Mass Air EFI system. Lots of technical support available as well as aftermarket parts support, including wiring harnesses.

I would seriously consider not making the Bronco a 2WD. Besides killing the resale value, you will probably find it to be cost prohibitive. Think about what's involved in replacing the entire front suspension with "something else" to get rid of the front differential.

Here's a link to some info on the most popular transmission swaps into a Bronco. http://classicbroncos.com/tech/700r4-4-speed-automatic-transmission-guide
