Does anyone that has used the Moates Quarterhorse tuning have a list of what I would need to buy to ?

-I want to have a tuner do a custom program and be able to change as many parameters as possible.

Thanks,
BI

I haven't bought it yet, but have been reasurching it quite abit. My understanding
is you need:
Quarter Horse
Interface cable
Binary Editor (software)
EEC Analyzier (software)

Tuner may have the software, I called around here (SE Michigan) and there
werent many tuners using it, most everyone uses SCT.

May want to e-mail Moates and see if they have a dealer or tuner list.

There is a lot of tuning software to choose from. I don't remember it all off the top of my head though. Many of these software are cumbersome and buggy. Binary Editor seems to be the good one. Tweecer is quite popular but it seems to have been buggy in the past. The latest edition may be fine. I have no experience. This is where I get my information: http://eectuning.org/forums/

If you go to the Moates Quarterhorse website everything is explained there and there is a tech-line via email.

I emailed moates over a week ago and haven't heard back.

-They may not be interested but I don't have the time to look all over thier site I just want a "cadillac" package" to bring to my tuner.

-I will check with the other tuning software companies and see if I can get some interest.

I think that the Moates Quarterhorse is the best for our EEC-IV computers. You will want Binary Editor on your PC and will connect your PC to your Bronco's ECU.

I think you need to take the time to read and post questions here:

you will need to find a tuner first then see what the guy recommends for tuning which more than likely will be what he is the best at. just buying tuning software and taking it to a shop will be an expensive propsition and more than likely the tune will be mediocre at best. just because a tuner knows what afr and timing is required at given engine load doesnt mean he can manipulate the software to get the results he wants.

I have Moates and it is (imo) the best out there, however the learning curve is not easy for the novice and you will love it but you really need a w/b to take full advantage of it. On the plus side you will end up with the best tune for you app. that no tuner can make. As mentioned the info on eectuner is a must on this.

Gratitude and I will take the time to get on the eecxtuning site and read.

-I am real close to an initial start so I am so preoccupied with rechecking my previous checks in hopes to avoid a major mishap.

Thanks again, BI

Why not become an EEC guru? So what if you make mistakes along the way? I really think you should really apply your self to becoming an EFI tuner. You can become a Ford EFI guru.

I want to hack Ford computers and don't mind frying one or two. I have no problem buying sacraficial components as learning aids.

With all the help there is on hacking and tuning EFI I don't think you need a proffessional tuner. Today I am carefully unwrapping wiring harnesses and removing emissions components I won't use. Someday I want to make a custom wiring harness for my Bronco.

You can help and teach someone else how to do EFI stuff tomorrow.

360 ,
-thanks for the encouragement.

-I will think about that efi guru.

-I do plan on attending the EFI university basic class. I met a gentleman with a Nissan GTR (that car is INSANE!!!) and he greatly encouraged the efi university as you get classroom and dyno tuning teaching. He said he loved it and it really helped him when he had his GTR software designed.

- Thanks, BI

Tuner may have the software, I called around here (SE Michigan) and there

You also need a laptop (obviously, but if you don't have one and you are only going to tune
one combo ever, that is another $3-400) and a wideband (which are under $200 these days).

I also could not find anyone who will tune using the quarterhorse in NJ, they all use SCT. Here is a link to
a shop that has costs broken down pretty well for dyno tuning different combos. Like every other shop, they use SCT.

http://www.realspeedautomotive.com/dynotuning.html

Anyway, for a heavily modified , normally aspirated combo, looks like

SCT chip $300
Tune $400-450

so $750 and you are done.

I found one E-mail for an online tuner and this thread has a reply from POPSRACING, that seems
to be a dealer for QH and uses BE with SCT (maybe they can do QH too, not sure).

http://eectuning.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=19274

Looks like this guy from FSB used them with success.

http://www.fullsizebronco.com/forum/showthread.php?t=200735

Not sure what the online tuners do about timing, since there are no knock sensors with the typical A9L package.
Even self tuning is hard if you can't hear the knock over many exhaust setups.

I did recently buy a QH/BE/EA package for my dads car (stock 5.0 HO with 7PSI vortech). What I paid

$249
http://www.moates.net/quarterhorse-for-fords-p-199.html?cPath=63

$205 -includes both BE and EA with hardware dongle (allows use on any laptop, not just one registered).
http://www.eecanalyzer.net/shop/

Add laptop, wideband, and mailorder tune (100-450???), looks like

$650 ish and another $1-400 for tune (if needed). Add 400$ for laptop if you don't have one.

I've only modified idle RPM, base timing tables, and cold start A/F modifiers so far. That combo does not need much
in tuning since we are still using the vortech FMU and stock mass air meter/inj. I also changed the fuel setting table that
allows you to pick the fuel you are using. Changed it to E10, since that is pretty much what is sold nationwide I think these days.

If I was only going to get one tune done, one time, on one vehicle, and never change my combo again, it would be
hard to justify the cost for the self tuning setup (plus the learning curve is steep). It really depends upon your combo as
to whether I would start with an experienced tune.

My tuner is in San Josa, CA (Z car garage). The guy is brilliant and despite his specialty in Datsun/nissan/infinity he has done may Mustangs with great success. Yes he primarily uses SCT but can manage his way with any programming system thrown his way. He also uses the dyno and wideband with every tune-up. He will soon be a Moates pro too. BI

I wonder if this is still true with SCT (post was from 2 years ago).

"SCT doesn't have a datalogging option for EEC-IV, so to do an EEC-IV tune with SCT requires that you plug in a bunch of numbers, burn a chip, shut the engine down, install the chip, then put the EEC back together and hope for the best."
