Mustang EFI to Explorer EFI Question

Hi, my '76 trail truck has an EFI setup out of a 91’ Mustang, with a T18 transmission. It ran pretty well for a few years, but the engine is pretty much shot now. I haven’t had a lot of luck finding another mustang motor in my area, but I did find a good deal on an Explorer 5.0 out of a 96.

My question is, if I go the explorer route, would I just reuse the Mustang EFI stuff? What parts do I need to make sure I get with the Explorer motor?

Thanks in advance.

The front dress is used all the time as is the upper and lower intake. I believe the exploder has a halls device on the crank instead of a dizzy which would mean if you ran the 96 you would have to us it's computer and everything. I believe that most go 89-94 stang efi harness and computer for simplicity.

Im running a 96 explorer motor with mostly 93 mustang parts (dizzy, harness, computer, MAF, solenoid, starter (91 mustang), sensors, valve covers (91 mustang). Explorer stuff I kept- motor, intakes, throttle body, Front dress/serpentine system, power steering pump (running 33X12.5r15 tires). Hope that helps.

You can replace just the long block from the Explorer (Assuming in good condition, or rebuild)and put all the Mustang stuff back on it.

Yeah, swap the mustang intake and distributor onto the expy motor and keep the front dress if you want a little more clearance. Otherwise swap the front dress also and have basically the same thing you've always had.

But there are some out there that take off your hands the expy stuff that you don't use.

The '96 Explorer has GT40 style heads and intakes which would be an upgrade from your Mustang 5.0. Just pull the cam position sensor out and drop your Mustang dizzy in. If you use the front dress, you will need to make a timing mark indicator as the Explorer has a crank position sensor there instead.

To use the explorer front accessories you also need the explorer timing cover.

CobraBronco - Not sure if you have a stock hood and stock body lift, but the Explorer GT-40 Intake is a little taller (than GT mustang Intake) and may have hood clearance issues.
