Explorer Serpentine VS Mustang 5.0 EFI Serpentine, I'm confused...

Yes, the CFI version in '85 was branded HO, but the HP difference between it and the Holley-carbed 4 bbl HO was even greater for that year than you stated - 165 HP vs. 210 HP - 45 HP! Ford started the HO nomenclature on the air cleaners when the '82 GT was reborn - with a whopping 157 HP and a 2 bbl carb. It's all relative though - I remember the '82s as being a real breath of fresh air, and hope, when they were introduced.

I think Shannon ditched his CFI in pretty short order for Mustang SEFI. Good words on the GM TBI EFI. Unfortunately there are still plenty of folks out there that refer to it as an "electronic carburetor", which of course it isn't. There were electronic carburetors - and they were awful.

I picked up a 5.0L from an 89 Mustang a few years back. I rebuilt it with the intent of using it for a different project. I decided the other day that I am putting it in my 89 Mustang that is getting the 4 cyl to V-8 swap. I had to think hard what I did to turn it into a carb ready engine. The stock timing cover was set up for a mechanical fuel pump. All I had to do was open up the timing cover for the fuel pump arm to get into the fuel pump eccentric on the camshaft. Since I am sticking to the Mustang style efi, I removed the mechanical fuel pump, left the eccentric on the cam and installed a fuel pump block off plate, which is the same as a BB Chevy engine.

Although I felt like I paid a lot of attention to the Ford cars and their powertrains in the early/mid '80s as a young teen, the CFI was totally off my radar until a decade later when Bronco folks were trying to figure out which EFI systems to use. Only one Bronco owner that I know of (Shannon Shirk, for those of you who were around in the Bronco mailing list(s) days) ever adapted the CFI stuff (think his was from a Lincoln) to his truck. And as I recall, his installation was quite memorable because in the attempt to clean up the wiring in his harness, he inadvertently wiped all the coloring and/or lettering off the wires which made the installation a lot more difficult.

….. Shannon Shirk. Not many of us around remember him. Wonder what that guy is doing now.

Yep, one of the OG internet Bronco guys. He is one of our gang of 5 that started the first Bronco mailing list back in Feb. '95. He sold his Bronco(s) years ago and now drives a JK. Seems to get out 'wheeling from time to time based on what I see on FB.

I was on that mailing list. Some days I would check my email in the afternoon and have 100-200 emails.

This kind of history is very interesting to me, because my 1st "heavy" EB time period started around this time. I was a freshman in college in '96 and spent way too much time reading/researching on EB pages and Pirate 4x4. In 97/98 I took a '68 from 6cyl to V8 and eventually Np435/205 and lockers...D44 etc all with hand tools and passion!

I eventually sold/traded it to a guy that drove from Long Beach, Ca in a Toyota pickup, we changed the 3rd member in the driveway and he drove it all the way back! I was so proud that I built that 302 ha! He send me one set of pics, after painting it red and doing a trail run with a group. Wish I knew where it was.

How I bought it, and how it ended up:

Haha, totally! There wasn't nearly as much info either and not nearly as many upgrades to waste your money on!
