Found an old thread by @skerrybronco here (https://classicbroncos.com/forums/threads/5-0-explorer-front.240782/)
but I couldn’t reply on it. First off, Skerry, did you cutting that off have any issues or still working?

I searched and I could find anyone else posting about this. It’s def not a cam sync as someone mentioned, otherwise it would fit under the Explorer cover.

I have the same one and same issue. Just need to make sure it’s ok to cut this thing.

It is an oil slinger to keep oil on the chain, I do not know if it’s needed for the gear set though.

That does make sense, however, it’s clearly can’t be there on an explorer…so what’s there on an explorer?

Anyone have a pic?

I've done it with just a washer. It was part of some timing set. Covered the dowel pin halfway so I knew it could never fall out. It was a good washer that belonged there, not just some ordinary washer. I would do that before I started cutting up that tab.

I bet that tab was just an assembly aid. As they were tossing the parts on there was a check that the tab was pointing the right direction .

Yeah, it’s fine though, I already cut the piece, thread locked and torqued.

The real pia was cutting the chain separator on the front cover. I had to do that on the Mustang one too but I don’t remember it being that much of a pain.

Haven’t mounted the cover yet. Can’t decide on color. I had the Mustang one blue like the block but I don’t have that same blue and the one I bought looks different. Might just keep it aluminum but need to paint the bolts since the ones from Sandman are black.

I’d buy a new set if they made a set that was easy. I see the lists of bolts, but what about the ones that have a stud on the head, is that not used for something?
