I am trying to replace the rear brake cylinders on my 1974 Wagon. The parts stores can not seem to find the correct cylinders. It has 10" brakes. The cylinders have a 1" bore. I beginning the think the rear end is not original. My parts bronco has 11" brakes, so it is no help. Ford said that if it has 10" brakes, it should have 13/16 bore cylinders.

Thanks

Howdy,

While I can't help you with the replacement question... Have you thought about honing them out and rebuilding them? Did that with the rears on my '70 a couple of months ago - it was very easy to do. I would think a good parts store guy could help come up with the right rebuild kit...

Option #2 - Could you bolt the other cylinders (off your parts truck) in their place? Just a thought...

Good luck,

Jerry

A second thought

How much better would I be to just swap the rear end with the one with 11" brakes. It also has much bigger bolts holding the axles in. Does this mean it has bigger bearings (better axle?)?

I've had problems at some parts chains finding rear brake parts. Their books would only list 11" rear brakes. I think a NAPA would be you're best bet for a nation chain. If you're in western Washington, B&B Auto Parts has accurate listings but they're just a small local chain.
I've heard '74 was an odd year for rear ends with brake/bearing/axle combos not found in other years so I'm sure that's not helping any.

These are the Bumper to Bumper part numbers for the 2 rear wheel cylinders for 10 inch brakes, XWA37783 and XWA 37782. These went on my 68 1/2 cab with 10 inch rear brakes and were $11.61 each

Just in case the numbers got mixed up because they are listed next to the 10 inch drums Ill give you the other 2 I bought which I think were fronts. XWA35325 and XWA35326 for 11 inch front brakes. If you need brake shoe or drum numbers let me know. Everyhting I had was junk. Maybe NAPA can cross the number. I threw the boxes out so I dont know the make unfortunately.

I have replaced my drivers side rear brake cylinder and this was the part number I got. (NAPA)
46-37648

By the way, mine is a '74 with the big bearing but small bolts that hold the axles in. Yes, some or most of the '74's were what we call the "bastard year" for the reason you are having problems too.

Yes, That is possible. The later years came with Big Bearings/larger brakes.....You would want to check the gear ratio to make sure they were the same.

This must either be an un-original rear-end, or the result of a back-yard mechanics creativity. The 1" bore cylinders are almost impossible to find. The 13/16" bore won't fit into the backing plate. If this is this hard now, I can't imagine what it will be like in 5 years when I do it again.

SO, I am going to swap in the other rear end with the bigger axle flange bolts and 11" brakes. As far as gear ratio. Can I just use my old 3rd member. The axles appear to fit the splines.
