need help: checking C-4 valve body

Hi. Long story short----the recently rebuilt c-4 transmission shifts fine in all gears but will not engage 3rd gear. I have tried every other fix but have not had any success. Anyway, I pulled the valve body on the C-4 and wanted to check the 2-3 shift valve. How exactly do you remove the shift valve? I pulled the cover plate off, but could not get the shift valve out. The other valve popped out pretty easily. Could this be where my problem is....should it move easily like the other valve? Also, what are the torque specs when re-installing the plate, valve body, and filter? Thanks.

All the valves should move freely. Torque the bolts from the center out in this order:
(4) under filter bolts finger tight
(8) Filter bolts finger tight
(2) valve body bolts finger tight
(1) separator plate bolt finger tight
(2) cover plate screws finger tight
Now go back and torque the (4) under filter bolts to 18-20 inch pounds
Remove the filter bolts and reinstall the throttle pressure valve and spring with the filter. Torque to 18-20 inch pounds
Torque the (2) valve body bolts to 18-20 inch pounds
Torque the (1) separator plate bolt to 18-20 inch pounds
Torque the (2) cover plate screws to 18-20 inch pounds
Carefully install your valve body into the rebuilt transmission.
Check that the shift lever and downshift valve work smoothly with the levers.
Torque the valve body down to the case to 18-20 inch pounds.

Thanks for the reply. When I remove the cover plate that contains the 2-3 shift valve, should the valve pop right out or is there a trick for removing it. Thanks.

getting one stuck valve out is no fun, but having 7 of them stuck really sucks! I spent hours prying all them out a millimeter at a time. still have a long way to go polishing all the valve lands and bores.

since you have the VB out check to see that all the other valves move OK by applying a little pressure with a a screw driver.

all the VB bolts on mine were torqued really-really-REALLY TIGHT. I had to dig to find a 5/16"/8mm socket sharp enough not to slip off the filter bolts to get them out, with all my body weight on top of a 3/8 ratchet.:p

I used 4-5 different screw drivers and hook tools to get the 2-3 valve out. you have to pry between the valve lands and the valve body's cavities. some valves have little rings between lands that you can pry against too.

I guess you could also heat the VB in the sun or an oven. after it is pollished they will fall right out. Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping there was an easy way to get it out, but it dosen't sound like it. I will try to pry between the valve lands and hopefully get it out. Thanks again.

Be very careful. You don't want to damage the edges of the valves or the bores. It might help to soak the VB in some penetrating oil to loosen up the varnish.
