Need help identifying hood mount holes

Looking for some help identifying the purpose of the holes in the hood of my 75 Bronco. This ride was originally in Texas and Montana before making its way to Kentucky and when I bought it, whatever was mounted there was long gone. I'm guessing maybe a highlight jack could be the forward holes but the back two makes me wonder. Any help greatly appreciated.

OK, you 1969 Experts need to chime in here.

@tewlman the hood (and prop rod) on your 1975 Bronco is from an earlier year Bronco.

There is a LOT of incorrect information in catalogs regarding the early Bronco hood. Here's what you need to know.

When the Bronco was released in 1966, it was equipped with vacuum wipers, and had large knobs to enable the folding of the windshield frame. The windshield frame had a latch mechanism on the top front that engaged a single u-shaped hook that mo.unted to the hood.

The vacuum wipers were changed in mid year 1969 to electric wipers. This changed the location of the wipers, added the wiper linkage and motor. It also eliminated the fold down provision, as the windshield was permanently bolted in the upright position. The electrical wiring was routed to the new wiper switch on the dash.

At the same time, the hood prop rod location was revised for safety. If you look at your prop rod, when the Bronco is exposed to a stiff breeze...the hood can lift off the prop rod post, the prop rod falls out, and the hood slams down. This is bad, and I've seen it happen at car shows. So by 1969, the prop rod was modified to have a funny little 90 degree tang on it that engaged a horizontal hole in the leading edge of the hood support. So in a stiff wind, the hood will be captured both up, and down, and not smash your head on the side of the road.

But 1969 was a transition year, so all of the supplier literature states: "1970-77" hood. This is just a safe way to ensure that the 70's and up are captured. But it's wrong. There are plenty of other 1970+ features, like illuminated marker lights, etc...so it gets confusing. But the late 1969 Bronco with electric wipers uses the same hood as the 70-77. The early 1969 hood uses the vacuum wipers, has the windshield hook, and (I THINK???) has the early prop rod.

This is one of those weird cases where the factory service part won't actually fit the Bronco. The service part for the prop rod is the C6TZ-16826-A and it is listed for 66-77 Bronco. But it won't fit the hood. So the installation requires someone to drill a new hole. So it makes the MPC kinda irrelevant. And this is where it gets weird. Over the past 60 years, a lot of hoods have been modified for the safety prop. And a lot of hoods have been changed. BUT the tattletale is the extra hole in the bottom of the support. (where your "early" prop rod pokes into the hood.) the 70-77 hood doesn't have that hole. And that hole is punched, not drilled. So it's harder to clone.

I know when the hook went away, and I know that the early prop rod existed thru April 1967 production. I don't know when it changed. I know that by June of 1969, it had changed. I need someone with a 68 hood to tell me what their their prop rod looks like. ( @904Bronco )

My 68 hood prop rod, same as the one in @tewlman 's picture.

A lot of mid build changes for 68 models.
Built May 25, 1968;
vacuum wipers,
large knobs to hold windshield upright,
U-bolt in hood center to hold windshield flat,
door window frames are bolt on, not welded,
pressure cap in radiator, no expansion tank in middle of upper radiator hose

My last '69 had the newer prop rod. But it was a factory vacuum wiper.
So the hood prop rod change isn't tied 100% into the vacuum or electric wipers.

Excellent answer. Unfortunately…not conclusive, because the newer prop rod was retrofittable.

Do you happen to remember if your 69 with Vacuum Wipers had the HOLE for the vertical prop hole?
This NOS C6TZ-16826-A is showing as universal.

I don't know if it did or didn't. I just remember thinking how smart someone was to put that tab so the wind couldn't lift the hood. Then completely ignore that as I lifted up against the windshield.

I'm no help in terms of remembering if our hood had a hole for the vertical prop rod or not. I know it had the newer prop rod (9/4/68 build).

Calling @Oldtimer
Can you check your MPC for the hood prop rod C6TZ-16826-A and see if there was a different version? Might be able to figure it out if you find 3 part numbers for a hood assembly. Right now, I think there’s only 2. But there might be one that came with the holes for the windshield hook but the new prop rod.

Here's what I could find.

I found what Todd found in the 65-72 MPC, and also from the 73-79 MPC.
I also included the Hood illustration page from the 73-79 MPC, which is the same Diagram Number (P9203) as the page Todd attached from the 65-73 MPC.
Same part number and diagram from 66 thru 77, but physically not the same part. The document control side of me hates it when stuff like this happens, but the part from the revised drawing would work with the old hood and the new hood, so why revise the part number when the drawing is revised?

What did you find for the 16612 root number for the hood? It would be really nice if there’s a C8 and a C9 version.

Don’t forget that you don’t have visibility on revisions. You only see versions. Everybody thinks the letter at the end is rev. It’s not. So don’t worry, There’s a drawing out there with C6TZ-16926-A at rev_B. (Or _C, or whatever.).

James, sorry we've been on the road up through Oregon. Did manage spend a couple of hours at Tom's Rock and roll event though...

Clifford has a later hood on him, which I had to drill the holes to install the windshield locking U-bolt. Annnd there was no support rod... Looks like you did get the question answered though...

No, I just gave up because I don't have a dog in the hunt..

Ford's universal prop rod application threw me with the C6TZ prefix.

My goal was to determine whether Ford made a unique hood in early 1969 that was drilled for the hook, but had the prop rod hole in the front.

I KNOW that he later 69 with Electric wipers got the late prop hood.

And I know that the early 69 with vacuum wipers got the early prop rod.

It's just that usually safety and emissions items often get rolled into calendar year implementation. (after 1-1-69)

I didn't want to thread-jack the OP, but he asked about holes in the hood, and I figured I'd cover them all. Easy enough to clone the windshield latch holes, but as you know, those holes in the hood are smaller than the holes in the support underneath it. So they use a special washer nut.

that doesn’t cover my entire question about holes. I do see that the two holes closest to the windshield or for the windshield. But there are eight other holes closer to the grill that I’d still like to determine what they were for.

Yeah, we got totally derailed (as we often do) and never totally answered your question. Short answer is - we'll never know for sure. However, I think your guess of a Hi-Lift mount might be a good one. Or could have been some other type of tie-down mounts the owner put on there for strapping down game, etc. Really hard to say.

I have more questions than answers.
My guess is a old style footman loop type of bracket. Used to tie down something owner specific. Could be a high lift or shovel, Pulaski etc. The wear mark in the center was probably from whatever was strapped there and could eliminate a couple things I mentioned. Canoe tie down isn't very likely but still a possibility.

I know pretty vague. Tried attaching a link but it wasn't playing nice. I need to re-up my contributor status.

But to further clarify what Todd Z was saying the holes are not stock from Ford. So they were drilled by a previous owner(s) at some point.
