I just got my bronco and don't know much about it. The seller wasn't too helpful.

An issue I noticed a couple times now. When the car really warms up and I've been driving awhile. It gets really hard to shift into 2nd gear. It doesn't grind. It just kind of feels like it's hitting a wall. And nothing will get it in. A few times I have almost come to a complete stopping trying to get that sucker into 2nd. I've tried Higher RPM's and lower. And it still has issues going in. It's a J style shifter. Also. Down shifting into 2nd is no problem when warm. Or when stopped and moving through gears. 1st and 3rd gear are like butter.

And when the whole rig is just kind of warm. It shifts fine. It's only after about 30 min constant driving.

I think it has the original Dana 20. It's 3 speed on the floor. With twin sticks. The clutch was redone about 9000 miles ago.

Any help would be great. I tired searching and came up empty handed

When its warmed up and shifting poorly do you still have free play in the clutch peddle before the throw out bearing engages the clutch fingers?

I can push the clutch in the same. No difference there. All the way down to make sure it's in. I'm trying to trouble shoot it thinking its me. But it keeps happening.

So today when driving I noticed. If I start to go from 1st to 3rd, and then up into 2nd it lets me into 2nd. But if I go straight to 2nd from first it wont let me in. As if the shifter is not completely disengaging or something??

We had that shifter in ours for a while and always had trouble going to 2nd gear. Maybe it just wasn't adjusted right but when going from 1st to 2nd we had to put pressure to the left when coming out of 1st, let go of shifter in neutral, then grab 2nd. If we messed up this trick it would jam and would have to slow down and go back to 1st and try again.
We just finished a frame-off and rebuilt the column shift back to 3 on the tree, much better.

Thanks guys. Yah I was up last night reading a lot of stuff about the Hurst shifter and I guess this a common problem.
My thoughts at this point are.
It only happens when the car is warmed up- why?
Do I adjust the linkage when it's warm? I wonder if the shifter is worn out? How do you tell

From I recall there is a adjustable stop you have to adjust on the shifter , front and back .... I have one ... I understand what your saying about when it warms up it shifs better. Mine acts the same way., till it warms up. Have you checked the fluid ? Maybe check it or change it . I would not think the shifter would wear out they are very soild.

Mine is the opposite! When cold it shifts great. And when warm, it get temperamental. Ideas?

So, took my bronco in to have some work and had the hurst shifter checked out. He said. Linkage , and bushings are good and plenty of fluid in tranny. He thinks it might be the synchro. His idea behind this was that it only starts to happen when the car is warm. After reading some stuff online. Is it possible it's the clutch and not the tranny?? That the clutch is not disengaging?? Any thoughts? Basically when car is off. It shifts fine. It doesn't kick me out of gear when driving. No real gear grinding. It just won't let me into 2nd sometimes once car is warm. But it will easily down shift into 2nd always
