Just picked up a 351W out of a 82 F250 for $200. Brought it to a guy to rebuild it. Wanted to make a 408 strocker. He broke the engine down and said I needed a new block, it was bored .30 over already and had some wear. My question is, would it be fine to bore it .40 over, or is this to much? How do you really make a 408 out of a 351W? Thanks for all the info, in advace.

The 408 bore is 30 over. some kits go to 60 over. Chances are if your block has some wear and it is already 30 over then 10 more wont clean it up. You could push it to 60 over but you are taking a chance with doing that. Find a new block.

my 302 is a .060 over and i don't have any heating problems. i don't recomend it, but i'm doing fine with mine. i've had a few 302's that were .040 over with no problems.

If I remember right (and I have been wrong before) the cylinder walls are designed to be 1/8" (.125") thick. From the engine that put a wristpin through the cylinder wall I could see that as fairly accurate, maybe a little thicker. .060 is half of .125

I'm not 100% 'up' on all the stroker kits..but it may be that the 408 kits are using pistons that don't come in so many oversize flavors other than the .030. Its the 393 stoker configuration that uses 302 pistons, which would be available all the way out to .060. ..the 408, 427 etc use customs.

Like the others have said..I too do not recommend taking most any Ford block out past .040 and I never build any that are over tha myself either. Yes, its done all the time..but..

So what you guy are saying is that you can take it .040 over but if it were you, you would get a new block. Thing is 351W blocks are hard to come by down here for some reason.

Well if I cant find aother block, what do you guy think of 427 stroker?

Lot of money into a questionable block. Blocks are not that rare. If you are going to spend that coin on a stroker, might as well find a good block to put it in.

I just forwarded Tims information to you. Yes I think it's a good price if you are starting with nothing. What kind of distributor do yo like.

Mallory..nothing but. Hyfire too if you want multi-spark. Jacobs is my second choice if pressed..

yet to be determined
My 427w is just a 351 bored 30 over with a 4.125 stroke crank. Do not bore that thing more than 40 over. You are already going to have cooling issues with the larger cubic inch engines. Just buy a short block already done and you will probably be money ahead. They are pretty reasonably priced. That way you can start saving your money for the broken parts you will be replacing with your newly found torque!!;D ;D
