.... who might be able to help me find a competent (ideally "old school" type-) Mechanic, who is well versed with OBD1-related "issues"; the Check Engine light on my 1993 Ford Bronco XLT (302 engine; all original with right around 230k miles on her) does come on now (regularly) and every Mechanic i have dealt with thus far around town (including the fellow who runs the "Automotive Skill Center" at MCAS Yuma) profess utter ignorance as to how to diagnose the underlying problem; i've done all kinds of you tube "research", bought an actual Ford specific OBD1 reader on e-bay (with the booklet), ran through the instructions and pulled codes that pointed towards the egr valve being the offending article; as a non-mechanic myself i didn't tackle the issue on my own and instead had the base mechanic replace said valve, yet .... the darn light still comes on plus now it seems i am using somewhere between 10 to 15% more gasoline (used to get about 400 miles on a full tank, now reduced down to only about 350 miles).

I am thinking about having them replace the Oxygen sensor next, but am hesitant to have them work on her again (since at my prior visit, when i offered them the use of my scanner, i was told, "no, don't bother; we wouldn't know how to use it anyway"; mind you, i offered them the booklet that came with it as well, so ....); i am hoping to connect with an honest "old hand" who knows how to get her running smoothly & efficiently once again and who doesn't mind working with an owner who's own competence around the vehicles he loves is (sadly) limited to supplying them with their basic necessities and an occassional detail ;-)

Many thanks in advance & God bless, .... tom

Hey there, welcome! Even though this forum caters primarily to the earliest Broncos, there are plenty of members in AZ so maybe someone knows somebody out in your area that can help. Some of our members may even own the full-size Broncos, or have had in the past and have experienced using outside mechanic shops to get work done.
You have the advantage of a 93 not being so far out of touch with modern mechanics that they can’t handle it. When you try to take one of our Broncos into a shop, most of them just roll their eyes.
But you’re right, knowing someone that caters to older vehicles and can diagnose OBD-1 issues will be a distinct advantage.
Can’t help you myself, but back to the top for some of our Arizona brothers and sisters to take note and see if they can offer any insight.

Good luck!

Paul
