I’m in the Bay Area. What’s wrong with the electrical?

I think you need to share the scope of your project, as in what is it you want to do/what the Bronco needs. There might be people to point you at or Vendors/Shops you can use. I am in the South Bay.

I must have a short somewhere. Burnt through 2 starters. Feels and sounds like Solenoid may not be closing and burning out starter. Replaced twice.

Factory big body starter (has a relay on the fender) or the small PM type starter. (That one has a solenoid on it) And may still have starter relay on the fender?

I’m in NorCal (SF Bay Area- East Bay) looking for mechanic that know these classic broncos in and out including electrical … any recommendations?
Where in the East Bay? I'm in Fremont. I'm not a shop, but I know a little about electrical.

Post some pics of your set-up, and I can help you diagnose via the internet. Or you can stop by.

Were they both fairly new starters? Maybe you just got defective starters?

You have to use your garage or gallery functions up above to post pictures that we can see if we click on your name. To post images directly to the discussion you must be a contributor for $12 a year. Or you can use an image hosting site and link the pictures to your post.

The starter relay on the fender would not be responsible for breaking or burning out a starter.

By any chance are these modern style PMGR (mini) starters with the piggyback solenoid? If so are you sure you have it wired correctly up at the relay?
That whining sound you heard when the engine was running could’ve been the starter running on it if it was wired incorrectly.

I’m thinking that if you had the wrong starter it wouldn’t even have cranked the engine the first time, so you’re probably good there with the correct manual transmission starter.
But an automatic starter has a different length gear reach and snout depth so are they not compatible with a manual transmission and vice versa.

New starter for 302 manual trans, and new starter relay … and voila ! Back and running like a champ!!! Woohoo!
