I'm gathering up stuff for the arb swaps on the bronco and it calls for a 1/4" npt tap. So far I've only been able to find standard thread taps. Where do you find npt taps?

National Pipe Thread. Any hardware store should have them. It's a tapered self sealing thread.

ebay has them too but I'd buy from hardware store 1st. Given the taper, be sure not to sink it in too deep...

NPT thread. s not same as standard thread. It is tapered.
If you have a Fastenal near you they will have it or be able to order it for you.

I'm pretty sure npt are different than standard. Electrical and plumbing pipe are measured by inside diameter making the outside or threads larger. Think 1/4" bolt compared to a 1/4"npt plug. Also when looking for this stuff electrical rigid pipe has a different taper than plumbing pipe. Electrical is pitched to keep water out and plumbing pipe has a pitch to keep water in. I'll try the local hardware store tomorrow. I tried depot and they didnt have em.

Ace Hardware should have them. I've bought one at one of the local stores near me. I also have seen them at my local Do It Best hardware store. Both carry the Hansen (Irwin} taps and dies.

I was hoping to have it for the weekend. If not I'll order a set of em. Wouldn't hurt to have em for cleaning out ports .

My local Lowe's has them. They are packaged with the correct drill bit, I think they are Irwin brand.

I thought about lowes st night. If my local hardware store dont have em maybe I'll roll over there. I have an Earl's shop not to far but they're $$$ for anything.

Only as a heads up - there are two types of taps. One is more tapered and is used for " starting and cutting " the thread . The other is a "bottom " tap . It's only tapered enough to help it start into an existing threaded hole. These are best for chasing threads after you've cut them or for chasing rusted thread holes . This is also the type of tap you want to use for chasing threads in a "blind " hole . The longer tapered type will bottom out and not chase all the threads.

My Ace has them in with the nut and bolt bins.
NPT taps are probably the most common there is, even more so than a regular set of SAE taps.

Also check the ARB instructions very carefully. They also use BPT (British Pipe Tap). That is used in more of the world. NPT is slightly different and not compatible. Stuff like thread pitch off by 1 thread per inch.

I plan on going front and rear with the arms. I've already got a 4:56 3rd member on the bench waiting for the arb. The 44 is under the truck with 3:73s and a true track. I've got the arb and gears for the front on the shelf waiting. The instructions for the rear arb were for npt.

Wasn't this a problem with ARB back in the day, using BPT threads??
