Odyssey battery choices

OK, the old Optima is nearing death in the Bronco. Decided that it is time for something new. I have a coupon for Summit racing and they carry Odyssey batteries. Now to pick which one.

Now the issue I have is that I don't have the battery under the hood. It is located under the passenger seat. Currently the Optima is mounted on it's side to keep the height down.

I am considering the 1200 series Odyssey batteries but there are 4 versions. 1 plain and 3 with a metal jacket. One of them is a reversed post version I don't need. But I am wondering if I need the metal jacket or not? Also considering the 1500 series battery but don't really want to spend the extra $50 right now. Probably shouldn't be spending the $200 or so right now either, but I need a battery and my mounting location dictates I can't throw a cheap flooded cell battery in there.

Optima is listed at 6.8" wide, which the way I mounted it is 6.8" tall. Not much room to go higher. Here is the Odyssey search on the Summit site http://store.summitracing.com/egnse...769489+400109+115&Ntt=&Ntk=&rsview=sku&RC=100 They are about even height and width, so mounting on it's side again is possible.

Open to thoughts?

According to Odyssey the metal jacket is to provide protection in high heat applications. Your use under the seat shouldn't need it.

I would skip the metal jacket. Does summit carry Intimidators? If they do, maybe they will price match RemyBattery at $120 and you will end up with a bigger battery (size of the Optima) for less money.

Glad to see you on this Ray. And sorry to hijak your post bowsher. After 6 years my Optima went south this fall. Mines in the stock location. What's the best battery out there to replace it with. I know the Optima has changed hands since I bought mine.

No Intimidators, just Optima, Odessey and XS power at Summit.
What is the Intimidator/Remy battery for $120?

I have had two 1200's since 05 in my 75 EB, my 1st experience with them. Now I have one in my Wife's 97 Avalon, two (1500) in my 2002 Superduty, two in my 2007 J**p JK, one in my backup generator, and soon I will need one in my 77 EB as the 11 year old Optima is only holding 11.8 volts...
I would recomend them...

Doug

some advice guys, listen to Ray I did
Got tired of being stranded with a inadequate battery and/or starter for the last time. Called Ray, got one of his starters and he gave me the make and model of the battery to buy. A bit spendy I thought but I bought them. WOW what a difference!! got home yesterday, truck been sitting for 3 days not started and its 34 degrees below Celsius ( Your temp would be about 32 below). walked out to truck thinking "this thing ain't going to go". Ray had told me when starting in cold weather to turn on the truck and let the battery wake up when I got in. Didn't think it made a difference but that thing turned over twice and started!!! RRRAAAYYY222 got any bridges you want to sell??

You guys ever look at the Costco or Sam's club batteries? They're usually higher amperage and 2/3 the cost everywhere else.

They are flooded cell. Which I will not put in the cab of the bronco, remember the first line? I have the battery mounted under the passenger seat.

Then the sealed batteries are just Optimas, which I have been changing a lot of recently. The nearly 10 year old one in the boat, still fine. The newer they are, the shorter the life span. Having a good warranty does no good when you are 50 miles from pavment and 200 miles from a store to replace it. I would rather just have a good battery to begin with.

I have the Odessey 1500 with the top and side terminals, got a deal for $189 shipped. Anyway we've had very cold weather around here lately and it cranks right up.......and if I add anything down the line it has the side terminals, like stated above.....and I have one of Ray's alternators to handle the extra equipment....

Where did you find a 1500 for $189 shipped? I want to get Summit to price match that!

I'll look for the site again, I had put it in my "cart" when I saw it. And the following day it went up to $209, so I figured I out of luck, but when I went to the cart to pay, the original price of $189 was there. They have since gone up to $229 I think. The site had a wierd name, but I'll look for it. It was a special they had and the shipping was free.

Summit wants $250 plus there $12 handling fee. If I can find it for less online (especially with free shipping) I can use that to wiggle the price from summit down to the 1200 price. Then slip in the $50 off that I am sitting on. Good battery for good price is what I am after.
