Oil Pan help

Too shallow for what, the oil pump or the dip stick? I know some of the high volume oil pumps won't work with the 351W pan made for Panther and Fox bodies. If the dented pan in your #1 post is made for 351Ws the same oil pump that worked there will work on a the new pan. The OE replacement pump for the '80s-'91 Crown Vic PIs with 5.8s will also work. So will the dip stick.

I got clarification that the pan hits the pump. With a 1/2", I am worried that if I happen to correct the pump, that the pickup may then be in the way?? The pump is a stock replacement for the '95 F-250...

In your photo shows a car 351 pan. If that pump was good why get an F250 pump? The whole reason for the front sump is to have room for an oil pump, not extra oil capacity. So the pan, pump, and pickup were all designed to work together. When the stock front suspension is fully compressed the front differential hits the F&E series truck pans. Some claim this can happen with the Crown Vic pan too, but my measurements make me believe it can't. The OE 289-302 early Bronco pan is the only one designed for the early Bronco chassis so the choices for a 351 are limited.

I only assumed that the motor was completely stock. I didn't perform the conversion. So I only knew something was amiss when I couldn't find the pan that matched. I appreciate the advice and I am trying to figure out what I've actually got.

I had low oil pressure before the rebuild, so I figured I'd had better replace everything I could to remedy that.

Perhaps I can get my cousin to get me part numbers from old oil pump and maybe it will tell us more of the story.

I had a Melling high volume pump.
I used that pan.
I had to grind the bottom/corners of the pump to fit in the pan better, but I still had a clearance issue. It was the front sump drain plug. I took it out and shortened it alot but made sure I kept the threads straight.
Voila. Perfect fit. That was 30 years ago.

Now get busy grinding the corners of that pumps bottom plate/cover bolts. Then shorten that front sump drain plug and you will be fine.

The only issue with that, is it may be easier to simply patch my original pan (cover the dipstick port) and run it. Was just hoping for something shiny and new on the cheap!

Look around for the best TIG weldor you can find.

Someone that is really good with TIG can weld gas tight, the atoms of gasses are much smaller than oil molecules.

I also used the Crown Vic dual sump pan on my build. There was interference between the high volume oil pump pickup and pan. My engine guy shortened the drain plug and cut/modified the pan to fit. I do not believe he did any grinding on the pickup.

You can kind of see what he did here:

Thanks guys. The decision has been made to patch my old pan. After ordering a Crown Vic pump and pickup, there were still clearance issues. My cousin is a good welder and I offered to find a TIG fella, but he thinks he can do just fine with his MIG on gas. If it leaks, I'll have someone TIG it when I change the break-in oil.

Thanks for all the help. I still don't understand why I had so much trouble, but all is well that ends well.

Just an FYI, I've been through two of the vendor oil pan kits, both leaked from side dipstick mount and one of the bottom plugs. Trying to resolve now.

Rockauto's return policy sucks! 30 days from shipment of order.

Anyone want to make me on offer on the pan?
