Paint Type

Its Been 25 years since I painted a vehicle. Looking for advice on paint type, looking to achieve a stock factory finish not too shinny. What is best, acrylic enamel urethane lacquer. Single stage, base coat clear, any advice or conversation would be helpful.

Urethane single stage is easy and looks great with a wet sand and buff. This was my first paint ever to apply and it went on easy.

My opinion you want a Urethane paint. Single stage works good if no metallic. If it is metallic then I would base coat clear coat. To best match factory finish I have used single stage Urethane non metallic.

I think the single stage is harder to spray myself, and if its been 25 years you might really like the bc cc.

.. I say It depends on how you want to use your Bronco .. If it's a show car then it's Bc/Cc . If you want it just pretty then I too like the Urination S/S.
... I really liked IMRON but I'd not want anyone else to spray it.
... Now if you just want a good looking trail rig then I'd go to say TSC & use their Tractor paint . Not sure on their new Majic Paint but their old ValPar was good cheap paint .

i shot PPG single stage urethane and it turned out sweet!!! I didn't wetsand or buff mine. Just shot a coat of sealor and two coats of SS urethane. If and when I get around to changing the body color I think ill try base/clear. I noticed on the black that tiny scratches show up easly on the SS where as the base clear your just scratching the clear, and you don't see it. This was my first try ever at painting anything, and for me it turned out perfect. It shines just like a base/clear system but not sure it has quite the depth look like the clear adds? I will add that I painted outside in the backyard not a booth.

Stay away from the old school acrylic enamals and such. You want to use urethane.

I'm ready to paint now too. this thread helpful but where is the best place to get paint? are the kits sold at summit worth looking at or are there better places to find good urethane paint? how much paint and clear coat will I need? I want a good orange metallic color. there is a burnt orange color that Ford has used for a couple years around 2007 but I'm not sure they use it anymore. I really like it but don't know where to get something like it. any help would be great. Thanks everybody.

If you're looking for a specific color like that, I would go to your local automotive paint store (around here, most quality parts stores sell paint too). They will have the color chips for the different makes and years that you can choose from. Did the color you are talking about come on Rangers during the early 2000's? Should be easy for them to find and mix up. The kits will probably limit your color choices. I used TCP SS Urethane and it came out really nice but took alot of paint. The price was good though.

I used TCP Global (http://www.tcpglobal.com/) very satisfied with the results so far, Interior is single stage acrylic urethane paint, Exterior will be bc/cc.The Color is Astra blue metalic, original color. The application was easy,the paint laid on smoothly.

Best place to buy paint IMHO is the local paint jobber. By buying local you have the convenience of getting something quick if you run out of it. Call your local body shop and ask them where they purchase their paint.

How much paint??? How many panels are you painting and are you doing the undersides and inside of the tub? What kind of gun are you going to use? Cheap guns will use ALOT more materiel and give you a OK paint job instead of an awesome one. I just looked up that 2007 Ford color. Paint code is GW. I have a similar color on my Bronco which is YR579M used on Honda Elements. Those type of colors generally cover well no matter who's paint you use and is an easy color to paint unlike a high metallic like silver or gold.

I'm not ready for paint yet but watching this thread with interest. Anyone have recommendations on paint guns, tips etc? What about primer selection? Does one use the same gun/tip for both primer and paint? What about clear coat? Basic questions I know, but all new to me.

Devilbis Finshline is an OK gun. They run about $200-250. They come with several tips from base to primer. Generally primer is shot with a 1.8-2.0 tip and sealer/base/clear 1.2- 1.3. You will also need to get HVLP fittings to properly spray with an HVLP gun. You will need a quick disconnect at the wall HVLP, both ends of the hose, and the gun.

Look on Craigslist or Ebay. I see nice guns barely used all the time there. People buy them to shoot a car, then sell them for 75% of purchase price.
