Hello all I tried installing a pertronix ignitor and it did not go well. I wired like the box said black wire to coil neg and red wire along with ignition red to pos. It wouldn't start and fried my start relay so that starter just kept running. I took

it out and put points back with new start solenoid. Any ideas ?

You wiring the positive to 12v ignition switched source - like the instruction manual states?

If it was running fine with points and you installed it and it doesn't work you either installed it incorrectly or it's defective. Rare that they are.

Confirm your coil is compatable and if you should be using the resistive wire or resistor block or not. Typically no.
Can I assume you did all the necessary tests and read the directions properly?

Which one did you get the I or II ?

Make SURE you kept the grounding strap from the breaker plate to the lower, non moving plate. If you don't have this, the points or in your case the unit you are using will not work.

The pertronix needs a full 12v to work properly. You cant hook it to the stock ignition wire to the coil as it has a reistor inline. You need to run a new wire. But it really shouldnt have fried your starter relay maybe it was just its time.

Also make sure the 12V source has power when the key is in start and run positions. I had originally hooked mine up to just a 12V Run but no power on Start obviously the motor won't start that way. Hook up a test light to check.

And minimize the time you have ign module powered without engine running. You can burn out the module. That was a $100 lesson I learned the hard way.

Thanks guys that gives me something to work with. Where did you run your full 12 volt source from the ignition ? And where is this resistor usually located ? Can power just be diverted before the resistor on the same ignition line ?

Thanks again
Dave

The resistor wire is usually hooked inline near the igintion switch pink/yellow wire if I remember correctly. You could get your full 12volts at the same post its connected to on the ignition switch.

I think it is fine to bypass the resistor on stock wiring, but I'm not 100% on that. Pertronix has a manual online, check that before you trust my memory. Another resource for wiring is to find a painless harness manual. They are good about directions for different wiring setups.

A lot of broncos had a balist resistor it white and ceramic. Pull that out and go ignition to the pertronix. Are you running a stock or aftermarket harness

This ^^. Run it directly to Pertronix distributor module. Leave resistive wire intact if running stock coil. While I have seen some work the way you wired it, it specs at 8v minimum. Normal voltage feeding coil through resistive wire is around 6v. If you replaced the coil that's a different matter.

I run mine off of the stock resistor wire. When my bronco died while driving a while back I suspected the Pertronix was the cause. Turns out a new coil and I haven't any issues since. When I spoke to pertronix about my problem they told me it would run fine off of the factory resistor wire. I have been driving it like this for a couple of years now.

I will say that I do experience a rpm change when I sit in traffic during hot weather and it appears from the posts here that the cause may be due to the lack of voltage supply.

I have I think a blue wire exiting the firewall from the same plug as the resister wire that has 12volts. Can I use this wire to supply the pertronix?

Wires up right in line with the stock ignition wire to switch the relay and than provides full voltage from battery could just wire one up yourself with a 30 amp relay here's a digram. Trust me best way to wire up a pertronix without having issues after I started wiring them this way I have never had one burn out and seems to get crisper response.
