Pinion nut torque spec?

What is the torque spec on the pinion nut on the 9 inch? Does 40 lbs sound right? My research so far goes from 40 up to 220lbs. Or just use and impact and get it real tight. I thought I'd better check.

I've always torqued mine to 220 ft-lb (with a solid preload spacer).

Depends on whether you're using a crush sleeve or solid spacer for pinion preload. If using a crush sleeve you torque until the proper preload is achieved. If a solid spacer is used, then you're correct. Suggested torque values vary, but are typically between 175 and 220 foot lbs.

In stock form there is no torque spec for the pinion nut. Keep tightening until the proper preload is achieved. If you overshoot the preload, change the crush sleeve and start over again.

40 ft-LB sounds very light
