Power Steering Pump Pressure

Anyone know the pressure of a standard type Saginaw power steering pump. On my Coyote build I used a GM Type II pump. It is 1300 psi, 3 gpm. I get quite a bit of whine out of it. Just wondering if I am over pressure or under pressure or what. Just wondering what the Saginaw puts out.

I think Saginaw (the typical 'canned ham') pumps generally put out in the neighborhood of 1300-1400 psi. I see all kinds of ratings when doing a google search on it.

A whining pump could still have air in it.
That’s one of the things that makes a hydraulic system whine.

Maybe a small leak is allowing air in very small amounts and it’s throughout the system. Hard to say initially, but whining is not always simply from being overworked or underpowered.

Yeh I know. I just wanted to make sure pressure was close. I was afraid the reservoir was not vented enough but opened that up. Also made sure no air can get trapped in a high spot on the suction line. Suction is -10. Whines after running a bit but seems to get a bit better when warmed up. I would think the air would all Benoit by now but who knows. Need to run a bit again and checking bubbles in reservoir. Don’t see any leaks. Pump was new but that never means anything. Works fine just a little noise. Almost seems like running slightly cavitates the pump but hard to tell

I wonder if it could be a bearing then? Even though new, as you said even a new one can have faults. Probably including bad bearings.

Or some kind of restriction perhaps? Not very common on Saginaw pumps, but probably not unheard of either.

The pressure varies by the load on the steering box. When it's tracking straight without any steering input, the pressure is close to 0.

If there's air in the fluid, it would look foamy pink. To bleed it, fill the reservoir, start the engine, steer lock-to-lock at least 3x, then turn the engine off & check the fluid. If it's low, top it up & repeat. If it's foamy, leave it off a few hours and then repeat.
