Power Steering Pump Pulley - How far is far enough

I'm replacing my PS Pump (AGAIN, why don't I just go Sag or Hydroboost?) and wondered how far the pulley should be on the shaft when properly seated? Is the pump shaft even with the face of the pulley? Didn't come with an installation tool so I'm guessing.

Thanks

You really need the tool. It usually comes with the pump, but you can borrow the tool at Autozone etc. and take it back when you are thru. I just went on and bought the tool since I've needed it a couple of times. Then you can adjust it on till it lines up with your other pulley's. I've got 2 out here and 1 runs on front pulley and the other runs on the rear pulley.

Yea, the "installation tool" is about a 3" bolt that will screw into pump shaft, a washer and a nut. Removing the pulley is another animal.

Another vote for recommending the correct tool. I ended up buying a tool and I've used it more than once. The cheap auto parts store grade works fine.

The pulley needs to be somewhere around flush - the biggest thing to watch is that it lines up with the rest of the pulleys though.
