Total newb here! Greetings from Placerville, CA "Hangtown USA". Been lurking for few months now. Acquired a 72 Sport U152 back in November. 302, 3 speed column shift. Been running through the basics. Battery, carb rebuild, plugs and wires, throttle linkage and all new brakes thus far. Contemplating going fuel injected. I live at about 2000' elevation but will regularly be headed to the mountains above 7000' (Lake Tahoe is only an hour away). I do believe EFI will make life a bit easier.
That being said, I have been looking at the Pro Flo 4 setup. I really don't want a body lift and don't want to cut my hood. Is this doable? I have read through a few of the posts regarding this but no definitive answer.
So, my question would be...…..
Will the Pro Flo 4 have enough hood clearance with no cutting or body lift?
Motor is a stock 302, I currently have a $29 replacement low pro air cleaner for ease of engine work. I do have the stock air cleaner that I pulled off, cleaned up and sitting on the shelf.

Looking forward to what you guys think???

not 100% sure but i think it is going to be to tall. A 4 barrel intake and carb ar about all that fits and that set up uses a vr jr intake or a rpm air gap. Been looking at the same set up for a 351 and i dint think it will fit with a 2" body lift and a custom air intake even after lowering the engine

I am also installing the Edelbrock Pro Flow 4. I haven't even started to look for an air cleaner. I think we will be fine. The throttle body on the Pro Flo 4 is way shorter than a traditional 4 barrel carb. I will take some clay or Play dough and make a cone to put on top of the throttle body then close the hood to get a good clearance measurement.

Cherry72 what carb are you running? I was driving mine from the beach to my dad's in wrightwood often. When I had the edelbrock/Carter carb I would have to adjust it when I started climbing elevation. Since swapping to a q-jet I drive up there no problem. My dad is at 6000'.

By the looks of the intake manifold, it will be quite tall.

I have a Ford steel 4bbl intake with the Fitech. I had to print a spacer to get the air cleaner to fit over the return line and just barely clear the hood.

Pic was taken with a snorkel camera for my phone.

Holon 70,

Let me know how your mock up turns out with the clay? I haven't puled the trigger yet and would be awesome to know before I shell out the cash. Thanks for the response!

Thanks Tatersalad! It's good to know there are a few of these around town. I don't think I've seen another one on the road around Placerville since I bought mine back in November.

Steve L,

Thanks for the response. Stock 2100 on there now. The Q-jet is something I will look into.

Thanks for your response!

I am still wiring the whole Bronco and still have some of the EFI wiring to finish. It might be a couple weeks before I put the hood on. I will let you know as soon as I put it on.

We put the hood on and definitely have clearance issues. I bought a pro flo low profile air cleaner and there is no way the hood will shut. We did the playdoh thing and I have 2.75" to work with. Summit has a specter air cleaner that is 2.4". My hood is also hitting my upper radiator hose and my distributor. We have some work to do to get the hood to close.

5.0, those heavy duty motor mounts, edelbrock torq intake, 1/2 inch phenolic spacer for cooling, Q jet, and spectre low profile air cleaner.

I have 2 inch BL, using clay, I have exactly 2 inches of hood clearance from bottom of hood brace.

I have a bit of apples to your oranges, but the common denominator is the pro flo 4 manifold - it’s tall! I have 351W, 1” body lift, but on the good side a bronco design mid rise hood.

Could get a 2” x 14” air filter with drop base to almost clear, but didn’t stick with that. Did the spectre style. Happy with that so far. Had to shave a 1/8-1/4” at the carb interface to get a bit more clearance. It’s cast aluminum, so plenty of meat to do that.

Forgot to add, I had to use another 1/4 inch spacer under the spectre to clear a QW jet linkage arm.

Even the q-jet can be tricky with a stock hood. It's all about the manifold and air cleaner but its do-able

Just a glance at the Pro Flo tells the story. They close a Victor high rise racing intake. A truly poor intake for any vehicle with limited hood clearance. It's also a poor choice for a 4X4 truck. Race car parts are for race cars. They kill the low end torque that Broncos need. You can butcher the hood and the whole body to put an inappropriate engine into an EB. It just proves the butcher is a butcher.

Wow!

On the other end of the opinion spectrum - super happy with the pro flo 4. Torque of the 351 + pro flo is great - at least for my needs. Maybe better with a different manifold? Sure, but way better than any carb or TBI approach I considered. Setup and reliability of the pro flo is going great so far too. Almost a year on it and once I got the A/F ratios dialed in where I like, it runs awesome. That's why I went with it - had enough fun playing with carbs over the years and didn't want to always be messing with a fitech and why not port injection if you can!

Enjoy your setup as well.
